Hello my 748 is all tucked up for winter now and I haven’t been out on it for months unfortunately. I do start it ever few weeks and let it tick over for a good few mins. When I turned it off though there was still smoke coming from one of the end cans, there wasn’t loads of it but a steady flow for a couple of mins. Any ideas what it can be? Maybe it just needs a bloody good blast. It was running fine last time I rode it in the summer. Any help would be appreciated. Mark
This was covered a few days ago with the same on a 1299. Smoking from one pipe. It’s debatable as to wether it’s good to run a bike static or just leave it off until you are ready to ride it. Condensation will build up and not be cleared by only running for a short period
I would just fill up with fresh petrol add some petrol stabiliser run the engine for 5 minutes and leave it for 2-3 months. You will never warm up the oil properly (unless you leave it to idle for ages) which again is not good, so you will end up with condensation in the oil. What you saw was probably condensation from the exhaust system.
My 998 does the same and as mentioned it is condensation. As soon as I ride it for a while it's fine. Probably best not to run it too much when not in full time use as it could potentially do more harm than good. I run mine every few months for a while over the winter to keep the above possibilities to the minimum.
Thank you for all the info advice. If it’s condensation I would have thought it would come out of both exhausts, maybe not though. That would make sense as it does sit in my garage a lot in the winter. I always try and start it every month to keep the belts moved but admittedly only run it for a few mins. I know this probably doesn’t do it a great deal of good but was told you can’t leave it as the belts will go out of shape.
Put it in to a high gear and turn it over by hand every couple of months, that's what I'm doing with my 1198 whilst it's laid up for a couple of years...
