Chain Life

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by PeterT, Jan 14, 2018.

  1. is it reasonable to expect a chain to last more than 19000 miles, if well looked after?
Or should it be changed along with the sprockets although it has no tight spots or slack from the sprockets. it is a DID x ring unit

  2. I watched a YouTube video only last night where the guy said he got 40k out of a DID Zvmx chain. The oem regina chains on Ducati's are very poor in my experience, they rust way to easy and my last one snapped at 11k miles. Was looking last night as am going to order a new chain this week. :upyeah:

PS, don't wanna hijack the thread but is the 2016 dvt still 108 link like my last multi? Any one know?

  3. Got a sevice on Thursday and I will be having my second new chain at just over 20,000 miles. My chain is regularly lubricated every 200 or 300 hundred miles and cleaned probably every month. I’m not as religious with chain tension adjustment but it gets checked probably every 1000 or 2000 miles. Although not always, I can be quite aggressive with the throttle and I do use the gears to slow. Carole is just coming up to a similar mileage and is on her second chain which still has plenty of mileage left in it. Andy

  6. I've just changed the chain and sprockets on my DVT at 30K miles, I replaced the oem Regina at about 6k, mainly because it's made of chewing gum but also as I was also putting a 14t front sprocket on anyway. So 24k from a DID Gold/Gold Zvm-x used all year round in all conditions isn't bad, the 14t renthal front sprocket was also starting to hook, I work on the principle "worn sprockets wear chains, worn chains wear sprockets" , so changed both.:upyeah:

  8. Ordered a DID last night, but got email saying out of stock today, so what do folk reckon ??

    DID v Afam v Tsubaki ??

  9. Currently on Afam. It is still good after 15000 miles, and has only needed adjusting 4 times . DID needed more adjusting and I hink the Afam is better and will last longer than the DID X Gold thingy I last had. I like to make progress, and have only changed pads once in 30000 miles as I use the gears for slowing alot so the chain gets its fair share of strains and stresses. I lube every 200 miles (yes the chain!!)and clean with paraffin maybe 3 times a year max.

  10. On which bike?

  11. I had to get a 110L DID Zvmx as no 108L available but at under £98 I thought it was worth it and just removed the extra couple of links, I've always used DID and been happy with them so no reason to try anything else.

  12. If you change sprockets then change the chain and vice versa. You can get a quality JT chain and steel sprocket set for £60. No need to get an overpriced £100 chain.

  13. my longest one has been 30,000 miles but this was with a scottoiler fitted and regular tension checks. I tend to go for d.i.d. chains and either jt or afam sprockets. That combination has worked okay for me so that's the one I've stuck too. Sometimes buying them seperately can save you cash but not always

  14. chain life all depends on the chain make, type of bike, how you ride and what weathers you ride in,, and the most important thing is maintence!
