Living In France-any Advice?

  1. Thanks @camelfarmer but France was in 'cos I speak French; not so Italian, I'm afraid.

  2. From my own experience of living in France, I would suggest Tignes during winter and Antibes for the summer, but that might not work for everyone. Definitely try to visit both though.

France treated me well and I enjoyed the people, food and climate. Its so much more spacious than England. Moving to another country is an adventure to enjoy and I'm sure you will have a great time especially as you speak the language. Don't forget to eat Magret de Canard!

  3. Ha ha ha, you are damn right. We are looking to buy a renovation project there with a view to a permanent move. The border is only an hour or so from me!

  8. Old thread resurrection alert..
Recent events, ie Brexit and finding out that one of my work colleagues has throat cancer (seen enough of cancer in my family) has prompted possible action!
I'm now thinking of selling up and moving to beat the agreed (???current) deadline March 2020. Time is as far as can tell at the moment.
After looking at working 4 more years and being forced to retire in the UK, when looking at places to live that are appealing I am now realising the price difference is massively more than France. Plus cost of living is lower there. Add in this extended winter has really made me question why? I would stay here out of choice.
So, starting to search for a reasonably priced property. Dordogne, Lot or Midi Pyrenees.
Main requirements will be; Not too high (altitude for winter). Mains water/sewerage. Internet. Must have internet as my wife will be continuing to work from home. Property will be close to a village/hamlet or small town. Either walking or cycling distance for shopping.

Apart from things like the 'fosse septic' requirements if not mains sewerage, what should I watch out for? I am waiting for a quote for health insurance. What about transfer of my GS to Fr. plates, is worth the bother, or sell and buy over there...

    Jim ;)

  9. If I has to move from the Dordogne 450 miles north to Normandy then I would not be happy with the same weather as the UK!

  10. Avoid the trains for the next 3 months and I'd say wait till brexit is over. For one until the agreements are in place you do not know what you are walking into and 2, Macron has realised the socialist state is no longer affordable and is pushing through massive reforms such as on working hours, taking away public and and making it competitive private and less the government will fund your life.

France at the moment is a bit like having a big stinky poo, I'd give it a while before going in there. After that, it's fantastic
