His father was born in London, he himself was born in Somaliland which was a British protectorate so strictly speaking he is not English but by legal definition he is British. I am not a fan of his but at least from an early age he was educated in this country and has always run for either a British athletics club or Great Britain, unlike some other sporting nationalities of convenience. It requires singleminded dedication to succeed in a physical sport and that single-mindedness often doesn’t make you a nice or sociable person, as in the current topic of conversation. Andy
