Grinds my gears this. March 2015 I supply Quoteline direct with 9 years protected NCB and get my shiny new van insured. March 2016 Quoteline only supply a 9 years NCB letter as it's their policy.... unknown to me. March 2017 Vanline Direct only supply 9 years NCB as it's their policy. March 2018 Brightside supply 9 years NCB as it's their policy. Each year protected NCB, but the NCB letters don't show any growth - I didn't really notice. Since I insure my van before it runs out I'm not aware of the actual NCB years, so I picked up an old bonus from 2016 and just added the appropriate years for the proposal.... Admiral now want an extra £168 for the missing NCB.... I was treated like a criminal for "over claiming my bonus".... note you don't get the previous no claims bonus letter until the policy expires. I claimed 11 years on the proposal (should have been 12), but my NCB letter from the previous insurance only shows 9 (as it's their maximum)..... Admiral allow a discount up to 15 years. I've provided all the appropriate documents and await their judgement.... Yet another way they get money from unsuspecting or inattentive policy holders.
I had this before when changing insurers. I hadn't claimed for years. When I changed insurers the renewal letter credited me with 12 years or something. Then when I changed again a couple of years later I was only credited with 6 years as that was their policy. The new insurer wanted evidence of the additional years NCB or they would charge me extra. I had to get a letter from the previous insurer confirming my actual NCB before the new one would insure me at the agreed sum. It was a real PIA and pissed me right off. Why can the not just keep a tally and pass it on? Sorry I can't remember the names of the insurers but beware of Admiral. They are one of the insurers who will bump up your premium for a no fault claim on the pretext that you are more likely to be involved in an accident in the future. A couple of years ago I was hit from behind while stationary. The claim was settled, I got by excess back and I thought that was the end of it. But come renewal time they bumped the premium up from £180 to £450!!
Yes. You get an introductory discount, then the next year they whack it up by £50. No incentive for loyalty there.
+1 for beware of Admiral, as I understand that they ask about attendance at speeding awareness courses and load the premium if you've been one.
if you put a value on yer time 40ph in my case, is it really worth spending hrs to save a few bob? just thought i would throw that in there.
Sorry Lord Fin .... my renewal was +£2500, I eventually got it for under £900, so I'll spend a few hours having a hunt . ... it can take all day to earn that sort of dollar.

In the 1960s there was an insurance company named the Fire Auto and Marine Insurance Company which offered very low-cost cover. Lots of people took out policies with them. It turned out to be a fraud set up by a man named Emil Savundra, and many victims lost their money. The moral is that the cheapest is not necessarily the best. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_Savundra
Insurance is a Cartel of companies.... We have to buy it...... and the best prices are within 1-2% all the same for the same cover..... amazing perfect market*?...NOT!!!! If us poor little Air Con people tried the same thing we'd all be in Clink! * a theoretical market in which buyers and sellers are so numerous and well informed that monopoly is absent and market prices cannot be manipulated. "in a perfect market, confidence in a brand should coincide exactly with its market share"
