1200 DVT Yet Another F^^^^^^ Blown Fork Seal !!!!!!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JimVee, Mar 27, 2018.

  1. Well, I decided to go and fit some carbon I had just got from Philnanks only to find the right hand side fork seal has blown again, this will be number 3 in less than 6 months!

Starting to pee me off now and have booked it in for the fix, recalls and first service with the dealer but got to wait until they can pick it up as its contaminated the brakes and disc.

Not a happy bunny...if I hadn't just bought the bits for it I would jack it in! Come on Ducati, sort yer fecking suppliers out or you will lose another customer! even though I have just booked and aid for my WDW 18 tickets.

Will go look at KTM's or BMW's over the weekend and see what mood I am in before deciding.

  3. Ohlins? Sounds like a fork issue or a fitment one. Unless you are stunting it offroad

  4. No, its a 1200S Skyhook, no stunting just road riding. The problem is its a tuppence halfpenny part and the first time it happened was on a tour of France last year, then 2 months later and now again one month before going back on another tour to France. Its on my mind constantly and spoils the fun of biking, nothing worse than going into a corner thinking your brakes are contaminated. Its only a minor issue in the greater scheme of things but its just crap.

Anyhoo it is what it is and Im just not happy about it. Rant over :upyeah:

  5. I have a 2012 skyhook, 28000 miles and on the original fork seals. Have you maybe got pitted/damaged stanchions that are destroying the fork seals? Just a thought.

  6. I got my suspension setup up by an Ohlins rep and he wasn't happy because he had to take the rebound back to 2 clicks to slow it down enough. He contacted Ohlins and they offered to replace the fork internals free. Absolutely nothing to do with Ducati. At 2 clicks the bike was handling superbly so I declined.

Anyway, the point is, if it is an Ohlins issue then maybe Ohlins would be worth talking to rather than Ducati.

  7. Should have had Saches

  8. He has. He said it’s skyhook

  9. Mines the same mate, all I can say is if it hasn’t totally shit it’s guts out, then use one of those thin seal cleaner strips and try and keep them cleaner.

  10. If you're not out splat-landing big wheelies then it's what Michel said. If it's blown on the same leg 3 times over 6 months then the forks must be pitted somewhere. Insist on a new fork stanchion. Once upon a time you'd get them re-chromed and re-ground but probably cheaper to replace.

  11. I had a weeping seal on my buell for about five/six years, and used to wipe it down just before i went in for a M>O>T passed everytime,in 2015 i rebuild them but not used the bike since:(

  12. Thanks, I used the fork seal mate to run round both fork seals and the last time one of the guys n the forum suggested a cable tied rag on the fork which worked great but I haven't paid a lot of money on a bike and genuine carbon fibre/parts to keep using that. They checked the fork last time for pitting but will push for a more detailed inspection this time.

I have had loads of bikes and never had any fork seal issues including my previous 8 Ducati's.

  13. Do you ride all year? Is it grit getting into the seals?

Otherwise it's fork gaiters, and apparently they can look cool on a Ducati...

  14. There is something with the fork leg, or they bought a crappy batch of seals and you are very, very unlucky.

Under warranty means try and get a new leg imho. Good luck :upyeah:

  15. Have a good check of your fork leg

Fully extend the front forks by lifting the bike, you can do it by getting a pal leaning against the side stand

And have a very good look at the leg, especially the bit that is normally hidden behind the seal, look for any pitted coating or even a stone chip that may have nicked the coating, the smallest of imperfections will rip a seal to bits, and cause it to leak

I admit you would have thought the dealer would have noticed if there was anything a miss, but worth a check

  16. I guess if I do get jacked off to the point of going back to the K1600 toy, there will be a lot of goodies for sale and I mean a lot, I know how you chaps like a good bargain!;)

  17. To be fair, in common with almost all bike manufacturers Ducati don't make the suspension components. The units they use are from OEMs that are used all over the industry, none of which have a particularly bad reputation for reliability. What you've had happen could just as easily happen on any other bike from almost any manufacturer.

I know it's a pain to have had 3 go, but if I was the dealer/mechanic I would have had a couple of shots at just replacing the seal and see if that fixes it too simply because it's fair easy to do, seals are easily available and cheap. I like to work on the following principle:-

    First failure - inconvenient.
Second failure - probably an annoying coincidence.
Third failure - establishes an unquestionable law and predicts a fourth failure.
Four failures or more - confirms the madness of repeating the same stupid fix over and over.

I wouldn't take it out on Ducati or the dealer ... unless they opt for installing seal number four, in which case a stiff word with Ducati directly, and off you go to another dealer.

I mean, if you really were thinking about going back to BMW because of a fork seal issue then I'm going to say just one thing to put it into perspective .... "BMW R1200RT suspension recall". What an utter cluster-fuck that was! The way my mates bike (and many others) was dealt with was shameful and has kept me out of BMW dealerships for the foreseeable.

  19. Daft suggestion of the day - did they even replace the seals in the first place. Total long shot and 99% certainty they've been done but 3 failures in 6 months....

  20. So lets say they didn't, does it matter? Are we really suggesting they still go for a seal replacement? I mean, if they did then what are they going to say? "Actually we're going to replace it for another seal because .... we didn't really replace it when we said we did." because they'd have to be stucking fupid to think you're gonna go for that. lol
