Xylan Or Cerakote

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by comfysofa, Apr 12, 2018.

  1. As above. Opinions please. Hopefully I'll have the crankcases, heads and cylinders back on Saturday. Cerakote guy says he cash do it, not a problem. Dylan guy is OK too....trying to see which one is thee hardest wearing.....if I google "Xylan vs Cerakote" it comes up with nothing. Cerakote guy did say "I'll have to order in the higher temp stuff..." I think up to 250c so he tells me...any input welcomed....

  2. I had the Termignoni exhaust cerakoted on my 1198 about 18 months ago and it still looks as good as the day it was sprayed. The guy that sprayed it Simon of Flying Tiger Coatings is a perfectionist and worth a call as there is not much he doesn’t know about coatings.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. Is that even from underneath kev....the front barrel is going to get everything from the road and.the wheel....just want to make here that I get the most durable coating first time round!

  4. Yes all good underneath, cerakote is very hard wearing and doesn’t chip if keyed correctly.

  5. Great...cerakote it is I think....plus the cerakote lad is only a half hour away!!

  6. Hey @kev moose whats the difference between cerakote and ceramic coating....the reason i ask is that i had the old (mild steel) front pipe on my supermoto ceramic coated and it lasted about 2 weeks before the coating got pushed off at the front by the barrel. If i were to get my exhausts coated (im currently considering it) i dont want the same thing to happen again....

Essentially, when a coating fails, not only does it not do the job it was supposed to do it looks even worse, and just to stick the knife in you then have to pay (or do a lot of work) to get the shit coating off and have the whole lot done again. Or, not bother and then watch it get eaten alive by the elements...

  7. I’m not an expert by any means and can only go by personal experience.
Cerakote is a very thin coating and a bit flexible , so thin that there isn’t really enough to chip if you see what I mean, I don’t have any experience of ceramic coating but it sounds like it might be thicker and more dense and prone to lifting from the surface.
As with any type of coating it relies on good preparation to get a good bond.

  8. Cerakote is a thin film ceramic finish. According to the internet, air cured Cerakote C is stable up to 1000 Fahrenheit and as kev moose said, for a sprayed on film is very thin, about a micron or less. I’ve no experience but there is a lot of information on t’internet. Andy

  9. What ive had done so far in cerakote has been good (and im impressed) but ive not had it long enough to see how it weathers -yet...which is the reason why im a little hesitant over it....however the xylan on the ktm has been bulletproof (done 3 years ago).
