1200 DVT Fuel Range And Tank Filling.

  1. Went for a ride today 194 miles and got the fuel gauge down to flashing red with 0 miles to go according to the range meter but was still only able to fill it with 17.35 litres out of the 20 litres it is supposed to take, anyone actually manage to fill it up completely or did I really still have 2.5 litres left when range is at 0.

  2. I've been there too. I got down to 2 or 3 miles range in Spain before finding a filling station. It took about 19 litres, maybe 18.5, to top it up. I think the fuel sender (when it works!) is designed to err on the side of caution.

  3. I find the range pretty accurate. Got to zero once, 19l+. Got to sub 10 a few times and over 18l.

194 tho, fair play! Don't think I've got near 180.

  4. In many petrol stations, when you insert the nozzle in the motorbike´s tank, there is the possibility to engage the automatic filling which stops when a certain level have been achieved. Do you guys stop there or do you fill more manually?

  5. i fill to the bottom of the filler neck (as per the manual) which normally means pulling the nozzle out a bit so i can see where the neck ends.

  6. I routinely re fill with a couple of bars left showing and it tells me 50 miles to go and it usually has about a gallon left in the tank. Once and only once have I ever pushed it and that had fumes left at just over 200 miles. Admittedly that was a lot of steady throttle, straight french roads miles after misjudging the distance of the next fuel station. Andy

  7. I have managed over 200 miles on a few occasions. I've also run out completely and had to push the last few yards to the petrol station, when the fuel level sender was acting up.

  8. Today I filled up after 160 miles with the range showing only 4 miles. I could only squeeze in 17.2 litres. Maybe a bit too pessimistic as I wouldn't want to do many miles with the range showing 0.

  9. I have found that when im in flashing red on the fuel guage that tends to mean i have bout 3.5 litres left

  10. Was that on centre stand to the top of the inner lip?

  11. Appreciate a bit off topic, but I ran out in Ethiopia once on the crest of the hill and was able to freewheel 2 miles down the other side, stopping directly next to a pump. Smugness levels hit the max that day.

Back on topic, normally lift the nozzle and do the last bit manually to get it to the filler tube. I never brim it.

  13. Had my tank off recently. The fuel light was on & guage showing zilch. When i lifted the tank off it weighed a ton. Must have been 4 or 5 litres left in there. Although i noticed the tank wraps around the front of bike behind fairing & looks lower down than where the fuel pickup is. Maybe go farther uphill than down.

  14. Went for another long ride today and rode 12miles past the 0 range mark , at which point the bike started to surge but if I slipped the clutch and raised the revs it would keep going , I did this for three miles and reached my local garage and still could only put in 18.19 litres. Total distance done on that tankful was 214 miles with an average of 53.5 mpg.

  15. 53 mpg. wow. Lucky to get 43.

  16. Run to scarborough from leeds yesterday showin 58mpg. Ok we were riding very steady but thats with full termi & upmap.

  17. Me too, very steady run out to Matlock Bath, showing high 57's, although I must remember to do a fill/miles check as that seems very high?

199 miles done and 155 mile range showing - I knew having that mahoosive weight up top would have some advantage!

  18. If I am on the road and stop for a fill up, when I will be putting mileage in immediately after - then I brim it as full as possible. But if I am at home, filling up before garaging the bike - then I stop well before the brim.
