1200 Pikes Peak Broken Carbon Rear Hugger

  1. Went out for the first ride of this year, came home to find this:

Didn't feel anything during the ride, not ridden over any sizeable road debris either.

To top things off, its managed to scratch the shit out of the nearside edge of the rear wheel - not sure if it could get any worse!

So, looking for a carbon rear hugger thingie again....

  2. What make is your crud catcher ? Andy

  3. It's a Ducati Performance one I had sprayed with satin lacquer to match the other carbon on the bike (2013 PP).

  4. If it’s not a manufacturing error, is it reasonable to guess that the lacquer you used could have degraded the resin in the weave ? I have not got a clue, just clasping at straws but I do remember at least one other carbon crud catcher on the forum failing in what I assume was a similar manner because the guy never found the bit that broke off. Andy

  5. It bust and yet you'd buy another?
I don't even have one on the bike, back end looks neater imo

PS. First ride of the year!?!?

  6. I’ve read of a couple of incidents with carbon rear catchers breaking in that manner. Must be something about carbon not being up to the job. Get the OEM one carbon dipped or something.

  7. Am I missing something, I thought carbon fibre was suppose to be tough as old boots!!, carbon dipping my own I suspect if that’s the result

  8. Just don't bother.... :D

  9. I remember someone else's completely snapping off, but I just can't understand what caused it.

I am silly enough to try another, but for the mean time the standard one has gone back on.

Anybody know of a used carbon one floating about?

  10. If your first ride of the year is in May, why do you need it? Unless you go off road?

  11. I agree looks much better without it on

But get caught in the rain and see how much crap gets thrown up over the back of the bike, and pillion if you have one

  13. Thanks, but that picture is a year old and it's now done two winters, but that was after one winter and about 4k miles. Loads of WD40/PX24 on it wash off in spring. :upyeah:

  14. Shit, sorry to see that...

But, why lacquer something to look like a weight saving material?

  15. Did you park up anywhere unattended? I bet some twat reversed their car into the bike

  17. I’m no material expert but surely this is quite likely when using hard lacquer over flexible plastic..

  18. Yip, it's not flexible plastic and probably not hard lacquer either

  19. :thinkingface::thinkingface:

Maybe the not hard lacquer is less flexible then the not flexible plastic?
