1200 DVT Normal Use Question

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Nottsbiker, May 16, 2018.

  1. Hi All,

Recently picked up a 1200 DVT and am loving it so far - totally chilled out one minute then bonkers warp speed when desired. The screen is doing my head in (literally!) so will be getting swapped over for a Puig low sport type when I find one on a deal. Am also going to be after a small rack to fit the rear grab rail simply to take my lock bag as its currently killing my back lugging it about in my rucksack which brings me neatly onto my reason for this post....

...how the hell do you work the damn steering lock? I've read the manual and managed on two random occasions to get the dash to offer me the opportunity to apply the lock - god only knows how I made this happen as I cant get it to work every time which makes me think I'm being an idiot or there is a fault.

Could someone do me an actual bullet point list of the steps you take to get it to lock. I think the engine must have run first - is this even close?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ben

  2. Good choice.

Ignition off while steering turned ready to lock, immediately press and hold as soon as screen goes of, and hold, and hold, and hold...if screen comes on again repeat LOL

And I may sell my Puig I recently bought from member here if interested. Looks great but too much noise and wind blast for my comfort levels.

  3. Gave up on my steering lock. Too hit and miss so just never bothered.

  4. Yes they are a bit finicky but they always work, sometimes straight away & sometimes after a few goes.

  5. 1.Press ignition button once to turn off, release button
    2.count to 2
3.press n hold the ignition button until it “says keep pressed to lock”, then turn bars left or right.

And yes, the ignition has to have cycled on first.
Ps, ignore the video above and don’t believe everything you read on forums lol

  6. But do you have to start the engine or just switch it on and off ?

My twin spark was a joy to use, but this effin DVT, what a pain.
It's been so bad on times I've left the bloody thing unlocked
I don't know if it contributes, but I recently had a tracker fitted, which involves taking the fairing off, now I'm not sure if it always did it, but now I've noticed that if I put the bike on full lock the top yolk pushes the bunch of control wires and cables into the clocks, causing the clocks to actually move forward a couple of mm. Does every bodies DVT do this and could this be why my steering lock is so hit a miss.
Or is it just shit technique on my part :worried:

  7. 1.No need to start the engine.
2.the pushing on the cables is normal, well that’s what it does on mine.
    3.im sure it’s just technique.

  8. Also, if you have a tank bag fitted, it pushes against it on full lock so sometimes easier to remove first

  9. It happens without a bag on Paul I'm afraid.

  10. I hope so

The reason I mentioned starting the engine is one time the lock would not lock, started the engine, switched off, and blow me the bloody thing worked

  11. I know, but the bag actually stops full lock unless you force it into the side.

  12. The only other thing I suspect is that you may be leaving it too long between ignition off, and trying to activate the lock.
As in, you pull up and turn the bike off, take helmet and gloves off etc and by the time you’ve done that you’ve missed the 60 second window and then when you push the button the ignition comes back on.
1.in short, You need to count to at least 2 and no more than 60 lol !
    Keep practicing :upyeah:
