read on here somewhere recently that reg/recs don’t like lithium batteries and get stinking hot, I have a lithium battery on my 900ss, after a 30 mile ride I gingerly touched the reg/rec, stone cold ?
Sounds like the reg/rec is working well and the connections to it are clean, IME they get hot when the connections are bad and run cool/warm when everything is as it should be. If it was my bike I would be running a digital volt meter to check the regulator does not fail to high voltage just in case (would never fit a Li battery to a system not designed for one but that's your choice)
Ha, yes so far so good, it’s a Shido, the battery evidently contains clever bits that prevent over charging, it came with the bike if I remember correctly, or did it come with one and I replaced it with one?, anyway no issues so far.
Clever to prevent overcharging - but that make has been known to fire Ducati's so not clever enough to prevent other things 'other than overcharging' perhaps some Ducati's are more susceptible than others so good luck with your Lithium Roulette ………
Scary stuff, shocking that companies are prepared to sell goods with such potential issues, but anything for a buck eh!, do you have first hand knowledge of Shido batteries causing fires in Ducati’s ? or can you point me to the info?, cheers Mark.
There is plenty of info around - it's not the batteries, it's the electric systems not designed for them. Yes I know of one that fired with this battery and other well known Lithium makes too - it could be a small risk for sure - but I can't imagine why anyone would take the risk Vs a quality Yuasa? My imported 1098R Bayliss came with one fitted - I bought a new Yuasa for it for when it gets registered as I for one will not take the risk. And when a UK manufacturer of Reg/Rec's states do not use them with their products you have to take note (or not: as many don't)
Agree, it’s not worth the risk, even if that risk is a small one, you mention Yuasa specifically, is that because it’s standard fitment on Ducati or because they are proven as being superior in some way to other lead acid batteries?
Ok thanks Exige, personally over the last 6 years or so I’ve found Motorbatt AGM batteries to be really good (others on here will have had different experiences I know), I’ve had one on my CR750 for 3 years, laid on its side, it’s sometimes months between running that bike and it’s always held it’s charge, so personal experience means I’ll probably go for one of those, my personal experience with Yuasa is the only 2 batteries I’ve ever had issues with were Yuasa, obviously not in any way a representative sample but also hard to ignore (for me), , anyway the important thing I think is to move away from lithium , thanks for your advice.
I have a cheap battery on my R1 which is 8 years old and still going strong - don't even think you can buy them anymore. There's always exceptions - I think this one will last forever but a Yuasa with the forum discount if you subscribe to get the trade card is a good bet when you consider the guarantee and locality and convenience for most people...
Yuasa and MotorBatt have both been good for me. As Elsie said it's the bike electrics that can over heat and cause a Fire. If you search this forum you'll find first hand knowledge of a fire on a recent sports Ducati directly related to the fitment of a Lipo battery.
