Hissing From Front Brake When Applied.

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by comfysofa, May 24, 2018.

  1. As above...very weird. On my rsv4 the front system has been upgraded. Rcs17, brembo m50's and he'll lines. Nothing is leaking, can't see any fluid. The hissing only starts when the brake is pulled and the front wheel is moving. If I pull the brake while the wheel is still then nothing. Braking feels fine otherwise...I swapped the rcs19 over last night...was a little bit rushed so the only thing I can think of is there might be a bit of air in the system. Any ideas anyone...?

I might add while difficult to locate the hissing it does feel like its coming from down by the calipers...can't say definitively as its difficult while your moving.

  2. Hi - is it the rotors moving on the floating mounts. I've had bikes in the past where there is a noise similar to what you describe and I've put it down to this - brakes operated perfectly - good lever travel etc and never had a problem - I tried cleaning the rotors but never really eradicated the noise - just ignored it !!

  3. Similar to above, motorbike type ventilated discs certainly make a noise similar to hissing when on the move, but this is caused by the brake pads moving over the disc(s), nothing to do with the mounting bobbins.

  4. My SS900 used to do that. I put it down to the sound being carried up through the fairing. Always worked fine so like EPS said, just ignore it.

  9. I had a bike with standard discs, changed then to those stealth wavey types, and the hissing happened too. Worked great but just needed a few days to get used to the noise

  10. I bought two sets of pads for my 748 & 998 and when I changed them both this sound came into them but everything is fine and I actually like the sound

  11. Merely the noise of the pads gripping the spinning disc.
    Absolutely nothing to worry about.

  12. Yes they are...theyre PFM discs where theres a kind of big circlip that holds the disc on...

  13. Yep - ive had that before but nothing like this...in the garage going over it now.....tiny bit more air out of the top of the RCS but that's about it...

  14. Sounds like im worrying about nothing then....just a different kind of noise.....

  17. Yup it’s normal, had it particularly on my Fireblade, enjoy the TT!
PS. I was talking to a bike cop at the TT a couple of years ago at one of the corners on the mountain, there were 2 black tyre marks going off the road, he said that one was last week, he’s got a broken leg, and the other he’s in a very bad way in nobles hospital, might not pull through”, then he gave me the best advice ever, he said “every accident I’ve ever been to a couple of hundred yards before it there’s a sign warning you of a hazard, like sharp bend or hidden exit etc, every single one!”.
Couple of weeks later I’m on a local country road approaching a sharp bend with a junction at its apex, high hedges obscuring the turn, been round it a thousand times and got complacent, however remembering his words on seeing the warning sign I slow down more than I usually would, a farm van comes flying out of the junction, there’s no way he’d slowed down or looked, I managed to stop, 10mph more and it would have been a collision, so especially at the TT observe and react the signs !

  18. Cheers - into our 8th year this year....theres always someone faster, without telling stories its alway been the case and why i never try to follow anyone that is....

  19. Yes, you certainly see some maniacs, one that sticks in my mind was me doing 80mph round one of the corners on the mountain, I wasn’t on the edge, another 15mph and I would have been, anyway I’m half way round when someone undertakes me, like I’m standing still, he’s on the pegs, sparking and wallowing, almost running out of road he’s at the verge, and wait for it, he’s 2 up!, bonkers.
Another one was at the Creg where the one way finishes and there’s a traffic light stopping traffic going up to Kate’s cottage, a bloke in a Jag slips behind the copper who’s talking to someone and goes through the red light heading up to Kate’s, the copper goes belting up the road on foot and throws his radio at the car, luckily he hits it and the car stops, if he’d missed and the car carried on the consequences don’t bear thinking about :0

  20. After the loss of a mate I was chatting to the investigating officer and one thing he said is "the more paint on the road, the more the danger" I always look out now for chevrons, white lines, arrows, etc now and slow down accordingly.
