999 999s Suspension Settings And Front Brake Woes.

  1. Had a bit of a tinker today... 999s was kind of rubbish to ride compared to my old 749s so I got the spanners out.

It was super reluctant to turn so I've increased the fork from 1 ring at the front to 4 rings at the front poking through the yoke. Backed off the preload (from almost max) to halfway and did the same with the rebound. Haven't bothered to find the compression adjusters yet but it dives like crazy so going to set those midway too.

Out back I unwound the preload and mid-set the compression and rebound.

Like a different bike now, it tips in enthusiastically and I wasn't scared to wind it on out of corners still. Increased the resistance on the steering damper a bit but seems alright.

Anyone got any further suggestions? Seems a lot better already.

Front brake is a mess, bled it up but there's far too much lever travel. Either MC or pads I suppose, or hoses... my old 749s had the same brakes and were great, these are awful.

  2. Google section 8 999 suspension set up.

  3. Very track oriented... cheers though

  4. I have section 8 settings to level 2, so 4 rings showing on forks through yokes and rear raised to whatever the setting is and love it on road and track.

You really need to measure sag rather thathan just wind it in/out. Then set rebound and comp. Best to do after a ride so the suspension/oil is nice and warm.

If your not sure you can just take to someone but they'll only turn a spanner like you can.

Brakes I'd start with cleaning everything including freeing the disc bobbins, fresh fluid and s good bleed.

    What's the bikes millage?

  5. It’s at @ 15k

Midway settlings on everything gave me chance to see what was happening before setting it up properly. To set the sag I need an accomplice to help me measure. From there, once the preload is set I can work out the compression and rebound to my taste.

Brakes have clean fluid and now I learned about the hidden bleeder I know there’s no air in the system. There’s just too much lever travel, which makes me think it’s hoses, pads or MC.

  6. I’d recommend.
If you have the experience and understanding of what’s required to make it work and resolve what ever symptoms you’re having. Then get the spanner’s out! But start with the basics ie Sag / preload.
As a tell tail to how much travel your using pop a cable tie round the fork leg.
If you’re unsure what you’re doing or how it all works and interacts. Then seek professional advise.

  7. Another thing if you have dropped the forks make sure the front wheel doesn't hit the rad or oil cooler.

  8. It would only be laziness on my part to pop it in somewhere. Once sag is set then it’s just a matter of dialling in the compression and rebound. I enjoy the process.

    Thanks all

  10. These masters are known to fail and do not have rebuild kits available. I’d definitely recommend aftermarket replacements.

  11. Brand new OE one going on at weekend along with EBC pads and Hel hoses.

Job not only done, but done right :upyeah:

  12. I had my suspension set up by JWR Suspension a couple of years ago. I mentioned to him about four rings showing through the yoke and he said mine wasn`t a million miles out and two rings showing was fine.

I`ve since swapped the rear Sachs for a Showa shock. I just transferred all the settings across, it seems ok but another visit to JWR probably wouldn`t go amiss.

  13. I changed my 999 set up to 3 rings recently and noticed an improvement from the standard 2 used on road. It’s just a tad more confident and quicker to turn I sense going into fast bends. I know some favour 4 rings showing but not sure whether this is a better set up for track use. Rear end settings are standard and my model runs an ohlins shock.

  14. 4 rings isn't too fast, and I ride like a girl.
