Removing paint from an alloy tank

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by stretta, Jan 31, 2013.

  1. I have an alloy tank which has been poorly sprayed red, and I fancy going for the bare brushed aluminium look!

Whats the best way for me to remove the paint?

I was thinking about taking it to my local powder coaters and have it blasted, but is there something I can DIY?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

  2. It's paint. Paint stripper as a guess.

  3. Nitromors

  4. That's paint stripper isn't it?

  5. A bit of surfing reveals that using a particular type of paint stripper (and I am not sure which) could corrode the aluminium.

I have come across posts recommending the use of a aircraft paint stripper formulated for use on obviously aluminium, but have been unable to locate any in the UK. Many aircraft and boat forums have articles on this, but sorry can't give you a product.

I know there have been many post on here about people stripping with "normal" paint stripper I guess I have been put off using it by reading too much on the Internet.

Apologies in advance for being no help at all.

    Cheers

    Gaz.

  6. As above, just don't leave it on for too long. If you're really concerned do a test on the bottom of the tank first.

  7. After you wash it off, personally I'd buy the proper neutraliser for whichever paint stripper you use and use that when your done......

  8. Thanks Gaz, its a better answer than:
It was exactly that which I was worried about - alloy corrosion!

I'll give Nitromors a go though.

    Thanks for your advice lads.

  9. Am I imagining it, or is the NitroMors you can buy nowadays much weaker and less effective then it used to be years ago?

  10. That's what I thought last time I used it.

  11. FFS you're going to brush it on, leave it for a few minutes, scrub the loosened paint off with a kitchen scourer then, UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY REALLY STUPID, wash it off with lots of water to get rid of the residue. Corrosion? You will get more corrosion from the oily/acidic hand stain deposits you will leave behind when you have dried and left it for days or weeks before you decide to paint it..........

    get real guys.

  12. Gaz didn't give an answer, he admits as such. It's just waffle......

  13. If ever there was a good time to put the shovel down!
