1200 Abnormal Engine Noise

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by opus, Jul 14, 2018.

  1. Hey all, have a buddy with a 2012 Touring S that was recently purchased used and is now making a noise. Compared it to my 2012 and I don’t hear it from mine.

“I’m really freaked out by this noise that has developed since I bought this bike. It had 5000 miles when I bought it, and it has 7200 miles currently. Oil was last changed at 4,900 miles and the level is good.”

What do you guys think? I hear kind of a clucking noise.

  2. No change when he pulls in the clutch.

  3. Crikey, that definitely doesn’t sound good. Mileage is a bit low for a 2012. Sounds to me like it’s had a clock change to cure the neutral light issue or the lcd fade and you’ve not been told.

On the noise front, get it in somewhere to be looked at. Both times my engine went, noise was only present on one (crank snapped) and it was sounding a bit clattery but still running

  4. My engine is the one in question here. Yes it’s a Multistrada, and the damn thing only has 7,200 miles. Previous owner had several other bikes and didn’t ride it too often because it scared him. At least that’s what the dealer told me. I’m pretty pissed about this situation. Only had the bike for about 5 weeks.

  5. Both times. It’s the most unreliable bike I’ve ever owned... however... I do also believe they’ve fixed most of these issues in the later bikes.

I got a bit of stick on here for naming it the faultistrada. It was though. 2010-2013 bikes had major issues. Bad engine ones too. I was told by 2 dealers, they don’t take in early ones as they go wrong. I had a full engine rebuild including cylinder heads, due to something snapping. That was warranty covered. My dash went wrong and my rad needed replacing under warranty.

Finally, my engine went again before it was even due it’s second big service. This time it was terminal. The crank shaft snapped in two and would have been a lot of money to fix. Ended up going the legal route and backing the machine as not fit for purpose. At the time it was being posted on here, also had a few people come forward about main bearing issues. All at around 25,000-30,000 miles.

Twin spark models onwards, I haven’t heard any complaints apart from the same old fuel sender issue which they’ve never quite sorted. People love the bikes, they really are good. I’d just steer well clear of anything early.

  6. The dealer I bought it from is not a Ducati dealer. However, the salesman that sold me the bike just happens to be the sales manager at said dealership. He knows the owner of the only Ducati dealer in Maine, which is an hour and a half from me. He’s standing behind his sale and is coming to my house on Monday to pick up the bike and trailer it to the Ducati shop to get a diagnosis.

  7. I am indeed. Ducati’s are actually pretty rare here where I live. It gets LOTS of attention everywhere I go. The wife and I took a long ride last weekend with a group of Harley Davidsons and a few Indians. I felt kind of out of place, but they were a great group of folks, who didn’t mind too much that I was blasting past all of them constantly. Harley’s are slow. Of course at the moment all of them are riding, and mine is in the shed.

  8. If you bought from a dealer take it back its his responsibility to fix it

  9. The blumin great American flag in the corner of his profile is a bit of a give away.;):upyeah::confused::D

  10. I bought it used, from a non Ducati dealer. The warranty on used bikes here is 30 days or 1000 miles, whichever comes first. I have put 2,000 miles on it since I bought it. Legally they are not responsible after the warranty has expired. HOWEVER the salesman is standing behind his sale and is transporting the bike to the closest Ducati dealership for diagnosis.

  11. If they’re not a Ducati dealer, I wonder if the head recall has been done.

  12. I’m not sure. I put my VIN into the recall campaign website and there are no active recalls for my bike. ‍♂️

  13. The coolant recall was an old one, but an important one.

  14. Now this is just an assumption on my part, but shouldn’t a dealership be able to tell me if recall work has been done on my particular bike? I would imagine they keep track of all that?

  15. They should. Ask for a printout from the Ducati dealer’s system and it should detail all the work done. Would be good for your records if it’s not in the service book. Also would verify mileage as they would have records if it’s been in for any work or oil services.

  16. The dealers T&C do not overuse or diminish your rights under the sales of goods act speak to trading standards

  17. You are telling to US dealer network, unlikely same rules will apply as EU/UK

  18. In America they don't have rights ;)

    LOL

  19. Didn’t think of that.

  20. Whoooooo!........................controversial
