Hi, Just after some opinions really, the gearbox went on my 848 at Snetterton 300 last week. The cost of repair is going to be close to 2k so I'm in the position of deciding whether to repair the bike or split it and sell it for spares. It's a 2008 track bike including the following: • Ohlins 1098s forks • Ohlins TTX rear shock • Uprated Brembo Radial callipers & Discs • Brembo master cylinder • Ducati perfermance stereing damper • Ducati GPS lap timer and data aquisition system • Quick action throttle • Ducati perfermance rear sets • Termignoni exhaust • Gold DID chain • Ducati performance seat • Tinted double bubble screen • Crash protection • Many extra parts (including carbon) Thanks
Without doing the sums, I'd repair. It would seem tragic to me to dismantle a presumably much-loved bike because of one, albeit large, component failure.
I would say that the parts above are worth 'around' £3000. A complete bike goes for around £7000 if your lucky so it depends on if you can get £4000 ish for the rest of the bike which may be possible but it would take some selling to get to that figure. £2000 seems steep for a gearbox rebuild, can you not get it done 'on the side' for £'sss
Thanks for the advice guys, I was thinking along the same lines. I'd get at least 3K for the parts (the frame has a V5) but it all depends how long it takes to shift them. It's a real shame because I went from a "Big Bang" R1 that I didn't gel with to the 848 that has been pretty awesome!
Just thinking that with yours being a track bike it will not be worth £7k and if you were having to spend £2k to get it running again then to break even you need £5k for the bits. You will get £3k for the parts above as they are good selling bits, the wheels are worth a decent amount as will the frame be. You then have all of the other parts that you can sell, depends if you can be arsed to do all this. Is it not worth hunting about for a 848 full motor from a breakers, you will pick one up for £1000 +, then either strip or sell complete your broken engine and recoup some of the outlay.
That's a good point, I've looked on e-bay and the breakers want 1.5K + for engines. I'm going to start trawling the for sale sections in the forums to see if I have any luck! I do have WOW's + spare bodywork and some of the road kit to sell as well, I could set up my own dealers LOL
These have an 848 breaking, maybe worth a call, they might even take your broken motor in p/ex ? Worth making a cash offer if they have anything. Or offer £1k for one of them on ebay then sell your spare bits. RECENT SALVAGE - Pro Motorcycle Salvage - UK Bike Breaker, Motorcycle Salvage Specialist
I saw that, it's just stomaching the 1K charge to swap it. Maybe I should just roll my sleeves up and have a go myself, I've just been warned that some of the engines torqued up to 240nm and requires specialist tools.
I think you should snap up that gearbox on the link kindly supplied by Rushjob, and get a recommended independent mechanic to fit it for you. I'm sure if you asked for recommendations on here someone would be forthcoming with a mechanic not far from you.
