Anyone had an epiphany in their early fifties and realised they need to stop drinking, exercise and loose a shitload of weight? I think that BBC football guy has got me really thinking. Family - Dad alive (stroke 18 years ago), overweight, undertall, drinker....early 70's. Mum gone, cancer (she was a smoker). Grandparents all gone, loads of cancer and heart issues. All uncles and Aunts still around, few strokes in there. ME - 5'9", 42-43" waist, 48" Chest - 19 stone 10lbs - yep a short fat basht'ard. ... and going bald at the top..... calm down ladies. Cholesterol was low, when 4 was low and 5 was normal; now 5, but 5 is now considered high(235 mg/dL). My bloods show nothing abnormal, to the point my doctor asked who gave the blood.... cheeky fat thing he is NHS test results Your heart age is about 64 (I'm 51) Compared to a person of the same age, gender and ethnicity without raised risk factors. On average, someone like you can expect to live to the age of 76 without having a heart attack or stroke. Interesting to note they don't ask about Alcohol. 42-54 units of alcohol per week, mainly Guinness, sometimes a strong lager. Last week I wanted to cut down, then found Rhubarb & Ginger gin.... nearly 80 units total!!! I've had the scan of my liver and the scan lady said "to be honest nothing abnormal showing, but you need to loose some weight". Saying "avoid fatty foods" or was it "avoid food, fatty"? Manual/technical job, involves lifting, climbing and dexterous stuff. More strength building than aerobic exercise. The one hour fitness class as part of my physio has made me realise how totally F**ked I am. Smoking - not since I was a very young teenager.... found motorcycles and about girls , couldn't do all three, so the smoking went. Drugs - None since hospital/recovery. Nor any part of my private or social life. I love swimming, hate running, like walking.... Cycling just hurts in all the wrong places.. did it on holiday years ago for a couple of days. This is starting to sound like a dating profile..... I'm looking for inspiration....... Good stories, advice and also what went wrong.
I pretty much gave up drinking 13 years ago as it meant I could go out on my bike more. I have a drink now and again but it’ll be one or two every few months. I’ve not been snowboarding or climbing for about 3 months because of work but I should do more exercise anyway.
Yep. Stopped drinking - I haven't had a glass of anything for about 10 years. Still have wine in stews and brandy in Christmas pud etc. Stopped smoking about 6 years ago - I vape but zero nicotine. I don't take the puffer to work or out any more, just indoors. Started cycling - If you don't want to risk the roads, check out Zwift for indoor training. I feel a darn sight better for all of the above but each to their own. If you do it, and it doesn't hurt anyone else, it is fine with me. I dislike the people who quite or take up something and then get pompous and self righteous. The grim reaper will always come and get you but you can make it harder for him.
I've always been a fairly skinny git, but I did stop drinking about eight years or so ago. Once in awhile my waistline expands over my levis, so I stop eating bread, pasta, potatoes or rice and it goes away fairly quickly. I doubt many people need to stop drinking completely, but I don't miss it at all. That said I don't spend much time (or money) at the pub as a result so good and bad! Cut back a little and you will probably see some changes fairly quickly.
In short; get a dog and eat relatively healthily and don't drink too much too often, simple. Works for me, medium to top end of my BMI healthy range Tried to join a gym, as I have done previously. Never works for me, can't get fired up by that...
I stopped smoking about 35 years ago, didn't take up squash until my 30s having played rugby for many years. After chronic tennis elbow set in I looked to the gym then aerobics then zumba and now Latin dancing. I'm 65 in 4 months, my weight has been static for several years and my body is fu**ed. I still ride most days and track maybe 7 or 8 days a year. Life is too short, I drink moderately, I eat out every week, I live like today is my last. Sod being Teetotal and sod dieting, I enjoy an active outdoor life and enjoy everything in moderation. Andy
66 next month, never smoked enjoy a drink in moderation, eat well, 5ft 11in tall 13St, 32in waist, manual worker, carrying, lifting and climbing are the norm on a building site, the young lads at work are always telling me to slow down. Wouldn't change much if I could. Steve
the wife gave up fags about a year ago, she's now a fat cvnt, quickly checking over my shoulder i'v mostly given up drinking, i'm now just a cvnt. walking in the hills is the best exorcise.
