I think it's genius. The fact that the buyer is likely off the hook is a masterstroke. Banksy is brilliant, hugely popular and recognisable. Often imitated but he's sharper and more unexpected than ever.
I read a thing online yesterday that if the item is damaged while still in the care of the auction house then the buyer is not obliged to complete the sale. Whether true or not I don’t know, but if it is then the buyer isn’t out of pocket. You’re probably right though, with the profile of the stunt it’s probably worth more. Banksy may yet be unmasked as part of or associated with KLF. Hope so, as there are a lot of similarities only Banksy is cleverer.
