1098S back to standard ECU ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by RichD, Feb 15, 2013.

  1. Hi, when I got my '08 1098S last year, it was already fitted with slip-on Termis, free-flow filter and "race" ECU. The standard cans, filter and ECU are now sat in my garage. As are the termi baffles.

I tend to ride most months of the year and that inevitably means wet greasy corners, however with the current (race) set-up I find it a bit hesitant at the small throttle openings you need to avoid hedgerows on the tightest bends.

I LOVE the sound of the termis so they're staying, but thinking about switching back to Std ECU and filter to see if that cleans-up low speed response. I realise I should ideally get it dynoed and mapped, and that I risk running a little lean, but think of it like a wet-weather setting for an old-school 1098 !

Anyone got any thoughts or experience ?

  2. Does the bike still have the Lambda and EXBV fitted? If either has been removed when you go back to stock you will get a MIL light on the dash.

  3. Was the TPS reset after the ECU was changed ?

  4. Don't think you'll find much improvement tbh. You could tweak the gearing with a 14 t front. Would lift the revs a little at the same given speed to get you out of the low end rut. I ran a progressive throttle tube with some improvement as well. Also worth checking the free play in the throttle cables. They are generally quite slack and this can make the initial take up a little abrupt.

  5. Sorry Dave, you'll have to educate me; TPS ?

I'll also check if it still has lambda sensor and valve fitted per Chris' advice.

  6. TPS - Throttle Positon Sensor, when changing ECU's on some models it is good practice to reset the TPS, not sure if this applies to the 1098 ?

  7. Yes, the TPS is still reset on 1098 after an ECU change. As well as that, the mixture should be tweaked to richen the base setting up. This should all have been done when the kit was fitted. As the kit was fitted when you bought the bike, it'd be worth getting it checked out.

  8. You might want to try out a simple £15 mod first. Buy a R1 throttle tube part number 4YR-26240-02-00 it takes care of the slack Nelly highlighted and also gives a quicker action. The tube is 1/4" shorter than stock so there is a gap between the bar end and tube. Some live with it (like me) others drill a new hole in the clipon and move the switch gear.

  9. rich iv fitted a new ecu with standard map and fitted a lambda (thanks anth ) i had a low end hesitency/miss at about 3k on a constant throttle or in town speed. i havnt reset the tps yet and tried it out today, first impressions are that its a lot smoother and if the tps smoothes it even more then ....sorted.
wont rule out re fitting the dp ecu as i only wanted to make sure there wasnt something else wrong with the bike. i now think its just a caracteristic of the termi/dp ecu/ performance filter set up.

  10. Thanks for the replies and suggestions. It looks as though I still have the lambda sensor and exhaust valve physically fitted, although whether they're doing anything is another matter.

I like the idea of removing any throttle play and even the Yam throttle tube mod to help make it more linear/less abrupt. Then I'll look into the ECU swap as per the above post and see if that makes it any better too.
