A lucky escape, it’s the first time I had removed the tank on this 1000DS and as you can see from the first picture, the last owner had chosen to route one fuel hose so that it ran nearer the centre of the vehicle, i.e. - on the other side of the tank “cushion “. If you own any of the early MultiStradas then it’s worth noting that if you do the above then you risk this hose chafing on the suspension if not then anchored with a tie wrap et cetera. You can see the rub-mark witness in the third picture. Apart from the obvious possibility of running out of fuel, I’m not quite sure how this would’ve ended if the hose had rubbed right through.

Anorak ugly owners will also notice that this tank has expanded in length like they nearly always end up doing due to exposure (usually inside more than anything) to damp and moisture. Sometimes this is brought on sooner by using ethanol fuel but it’s a fallacy to insist that this is the sole reason as it’s often nothing to do with it.

  10. Gor blimey guvenor, fortuitous that you removed the tank when you did.
How long did the tank removal take you Chris, on a scale of 1-10, how much of a pig of a job?

  11. it really is a piece of cake John, provided tank hasn't swollen length-wise much (and yours hasn't yet) and even if it has, it's only the refitting that is slightly affected. Trick is to make sure you have an empty tank, and I always forget!

  12. to answer your question correctly, around half an hour if no fixings seized, I forgot that all the front side trim has to come off and sometimes the threaded brass inserts that are bonded to the trims can be damaged/rotate in plastic housing as slightly flimsy, particularly front 'dalek' trim under headlight (poorly thought out design). Apart from this it's around a 5.

  13. If it takes you 1/2 hour Chris, I suppose it will likely take me 1/2 day!
Normally takes me around 20 mins to undo the battery cover Dudz fastener thing.

  14. it's true I would be quicker only because i've done it many times plus fasteners ok/not overtightened. If you are changing fuel filter then a weekend should do it at your leisure, particularly now it's wintery.. Because of your bike's provenance I would think all fixings will be fine.
