British Indy: What Happens Now?

Discussion in 'Wasteland' started by Loz, May 23, 2015.

?
  1. Full Brexit with "no EU deal" on the 29th March.

  2. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a general election and new negotiations.

  3. Request Extension to article 50 to allow cross party talks and a new deal to be put to EU.

  4. Request Extension to article 50 to allow a second referendum on 1. Remain in EU or 2. Full Brexit.

  5. Table a motion in parliament to Remain in EU WITHOUT a referendum.

  6. I don't know or I don't care anymore

  1. This made me laugh as I recently got a 3 series and made sure it fell under £40k due to tax. So if that car with all the essential bells and whistles was £45,600, I may instead have gone for the very nice Jaguar XE with loads of kit at under £40k. I really do think BMW/Mercedes/Audi/VW will lose sales if we don't agree a good trade deal. We are a very substantial market to them.

The EU will absolutely screw us if we sign May's withdrawal agreement, even the experts state this:

On payment of the exit fee we also secure the ‘privilege’ of starting talks on a deal. The terms of that deal must be agreed by all 27 EU states (unlike the Withdrawal Agreement).
This will be a negotiating nightmare. We will face the same cliff-edge in two years, but with less leverage and unanimity to contend with.
Sir Ivan Rogers, former chief Brexit negotiator, has issued a devastating attack on the wishful thinking and incompetence of the Government and much of the Brexit movement for the last two years. His lecture to Liverpool University has been republished by The Spectator and is a mandatory read.
He argues that the EU will grind us down mercilessly over the transition phase, running the clock until our backs are pressed against the wall and we forced to yield to all demands on abject terms.

  2. Well, if you cannot trust the CIA ...

  3. The Chif Exec at Jaguar Land Rover seems to think otherwise. He’s stated a no deal Brexit will lead to plant closures and job losses.

  4. He's German, all his mates run German Automotive Companies, he has a huge issue with the direction of the company with BEV and PEV vehicles, huge issues in Nitra, huge issues in China: he needs an excuse - you are very naive and have no knowledge of JLR's situation to comment.

  5. The lemming option is sensible?
I can see that a lot of people don't like the idea of full EU membership because they feel it somehow weakens UK 'sovereignty' but to give up all the advantages of being members of both the single market and the customs union as well, just looks like economic suicide to me but then I haven't had years of having had my mind poisoned by reading the telegraph, the sun, the daily express or the daily mail.

  6. You're missing the point.
The point is that like for like, your 40k car will be 45k after Wrecksit but may be brought back down to 40k by stripping the toys out of it.

  7. Just for the record, I have never, repeat never purchased or read a daily or Sunday newspaper of any kind. I have a mind of my own.

  8. Am I ?

My point is there are more important things than expensive cars

  9. Nope, you have been brainwashed by an entirely other group of evil individuals. Congratulations on escaping the frying pan, anyway.

It's a deal, then. Lose the EU millstone around our necks, enjoy the possibility of control over our own society rather than having to bow before an insane, Soviet Style politburo and all it costs us is a couple of bells and whistles on a car most folks will never own.

I'm liking WTO more and more each day and I started Day One liking it.

  12. The car is only an illustration.
This will not just apply to BMW cars

  13. The governments of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands have already made preparations for Britain leaving the EU without a deal, with the European Commission relenting on their hard line by making concessions on freight, flights, and some financial services.
French authorities have confirmed plans to minimise disruption for the cross-border transport of goods, including a Fastpass system for lorries travelling from Calais to the United Kingdom where hauliers can complete customs paperwork online before reaching the port, and licence plate reading cameras to help limit delays, according to The Times.

The Belgian and Dutch governments have also announced that their ports are ready for Britain to leave the European Union without a deal, with the Netherlands having hired an additional 1,000 staff in preparation to run customs checks on 10,500 “foreign” ship cargoes going to or from British ports.

Both countries are appealing to the EU to make “No Deal” Brexit shipping easier, complaining France’s Le Touquet agreement gives France an unfair advantage, where goods only need to be checked once rather than twice as in the lowland countries.

Europe’s biggest port, Rotterdam, is said to be sizing up Calais to take away business, with a senior European diplomat telling The Times, “Competition is already cut-throat. After a Brexit No Deal it could become beggar thy neighbour and the EU will be keeping an eye on what both the Dutch and French are up to.”

  14. Not habitually the same paper, no.
I have occasionally had my mind poisoned by the local paper and the FT though

  15. I understand that, but remainers keep using this sort of thing as an example of why things will be so bad after we (if we do) leave the EU.

It's hard to think ' yes you're right we should remain in the EU' based on what are, to me anyway, expensive cars

  16. A non-weighted series of questions, OR, if you don't mind.

Do you believe that affordable gadgets represent the best way for individuals to achieve happiness?
Is it possible to be happy without the latest, best gadgets?
What are you prepared to sacrifice, in order to obtain the latest, best gadgets?
What would you not sacrifice for them?

Just trying to establish a baseline here. We can move on to other specifics, then.

  17. The car is just an illustration, prices will go up across the board.
You may see that as the price of freedom, I disagree

  18. You are free to disagree, of course.

    See how that works?

  19. So f only it were gadgets alone that will see prices soar if we get forced onto WTO rules.
How about food, medicine and clothes?

  20. It was very interesting watching Euronews yesterday, they were interviewing German business owners, a couple that traded mainly with British customers said they had done no preparations whatsoever for a no deal Brexit and they thought that very little had been done in Germany.
