Best Place (world) To Live +50 / Not Working - Opinion, Advice And Discussion

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by AirCon, Mar 1, 2018.

  1. I took madame française to the UK last summer. She was most disappointed that no-one was driving around in Morris Minors whilst living in thatched cottages, drinking tea in china cups and shouting 'Tally ho'.
Instead, we saw lots of aggressive overweight tattooed people drinking lager out of cans in the daytime, endlessly shopping in shit supermarkets at all hours of the day and night and a middle aged woman squatting down and taking a piss behind a taxi!

  2. Not my Aunty - she’s too tight to pay for a taxi

  3. I worked in North Yorkshire for the last six years. Some lovely places, Masham was considered for a move. Prices are very high in comparison, my house in France probably a quarter of a similar size property there in a nice village. If I had bought there then retirement would have been kicked down the road 5 - 10 years. Again though, all nice places get very busy and North Yorkshire police seem to have more speed camera vans than there are cars.

  5. Just has a look again at properties in the dordonge or whatever it’s called. Boy they look shit, barely found a pretty cottage that didn’t look like it need a full overall and renovation under 200k.

  10. OK , My Notes.
Mrs AirCon, a.k.a SWMBO or Lemmsy has the following Redlines.
    In order of REDNESS.
    • Not a bungalow, as they "make you unfit". I said "what about falling downstairs" answer "you won't fall if you are fit and sober".
    • Not up ta North, she was trying to rip words from my screen text file including; Scotland, Highlands, Hull, Northumberland, Yorkshire Dales or Wolds.
    • Not Wales.... she screamed at Tenby.
    • Not aboard; "You hate the French". Me: "No I don't", "You can't even speak any other languages".... she has a good point here.
Lemmsy is a North Yorkshire girl (Egton near Whitby).Moved to Egham for her university days, which is how we met. So I'm left with moving West, away from London.
For better motorcycling roads, air, weather, standard of living (more space, privacy), bigger garden and more out buildings (man caves).
Lower insurance and local travel costs. Smaller main house, so lower heating costs.
What remains of my family are in Swindon and Worcester and SWMBO is Swansea, Bristol and Hereford.... hence some serious bias in the following.

    MUSTS
    • Unlisted circa Edwardian Period (not new) purpose built house of at least two floors and plus four bedrooms or a smaller home with a gîte type thingy. We don't want a barn conversion.
    • Must be finished, to a modern standard and not needing any immediate repairs / renovation - I've had 25 years of that!
    • Drive to double car garage and outside parking for +5 Cars / Vans.
    • Tent area and motorcycle parking for Ducati Forum meets in the Summer.
    • Outbuildings (renovation of these is ok) for Motorcycles, Man cave and tools.
    • Must be detached house (not shared), with secure perimeter, + 2 Acres of land (unless an exceptional town house) and various gardens however we need to consider the upkeep as I get older.
    • Desirable internet speed (+30Mb/s),
    • Desirables are mains gas and mains sewer; Mains water and Electric are a given.
    • Good access to main roads in case I want to travel the country.
    • Reasonable Airport access (Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham, possibly Exeter)
    • Hospitals and shopping within 30 minutes drive.
    MUST NOTS
    • Not Wales, mainly due to 2% higher stamp duty and SWMBO redlines, however, Hay on Wye looks good.
    • No local traveller camps or other blights (Holiday sites are OK).
    • Can't have a pub next door or the stairs are going to have me.
Areas of Interest, highest interest First
    • Herefordshire - Serious investigation of this, thanks @Ducbird "
“Anywhere on the black and white trail, there are some nice little villages around Herefordshire,", Ross on Wye and Ledbury
    • Gloucestershire - Hay on Wye, Ross on Wye
    • Worcestershire - to be explored
    • Somerset; Street, Langport, Dunster, Porlock
    • Devon - 7th Worst place to live, apparently.
    • Cornwall - the best places are expensive and it's a long way from everywhere.
    • Dorset - Too Many old people, who wants to live next to them!.
    • Sussex or Hampshire - I used to live near Farnham, Surrey; so too close to my old grounds... feels too close to "circle of life".:skull:
EDIT: Budget is £995K (it would have to be bloody perfect) down to £500K (needing loads spent on it).

    Any suggestions or comments.
Thanks to everyone for their time and input.:bucktooth:
I think some of the places up ta North are brilliant, but we are a pair, so I must do as I'm told.

  13. Depends what you want/expect. Dordogne more expensive than Correze, I am 2miles outside Dordogne. I am doing a lot of work myself, keeps cost down, I have the time! already much improved after 3 month graft (erm, ok 2-3 days a week maybe, the rest riding the GS..).
Imagine the cost of these properties down south or in North Yorkshire

  14. Always be careful buying a house in France from a Dutch estate agent lol

  15. “Sacre Bleu! or "sacrebleu" and “zut alors!” and perhaps even “Mon Dieu!” ... see I'm shit at French.

  16. well, when they say fuckin hell, i certainly hope so.

  17. The mains sewer and mains gas bit you can forget about unless you live within the boundary of a substantial town, rural villages and outside of those villages you will simply not get them, saying that, it’s not a hassle really, just an expense ........

  18. Thanks, for that...
Perhaps I need to add a nice to have bit.
I live in a major city and we've had sewer pump trucks every day since last Feb.... main sewer collapse and since we don't have a cess tank the drains block every day.
Still waiting for the council to re-open the other end of the road, so it can be dug up and repaired.

  19. Deep sigh of relief , no mention of Derbyshire or the beautiful Peak District, peace and love.

  20. If you are doing this as a retirement property... Don't have big gardens... my sister who is a keen gardener did and 10 years later hated it... just too difficult for the upkeep...

That is unless you plan on fields and the like for animals or quads or similar....

Its difficult to find somewhere in the country without a campsite or caravan park near... depends how near...

Have a look at Clyro and that area (Wales) but near Hay on Wye.... looked at a converted Church 2 years ago - £400,000... there is lots in the area for sale... new to old....

The Black and White houses..... careful on the maintenance and upkeep and listed building aspect....

What sort of budget are you looking at?
