748 2000 748r - From Disaster To Full Rebuild

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by TelRobinson, Feb 9, 2019.

  1. Do the cams turn freely on the cylinder with the broken idler, there is a spring so there will be a bit of resistance .

  2. If they've been overtightened in the past, it could be a contributing factor into the failure of the idler bolt.
    Just a thought.

  3. The inlet cam turns freely and now I’ve got the airbox off, I can see the valves moving freely. The exhaust cam doesn’t move though

  4. Guys, I think the sympathy and advice is working on Tel, keep going.

  5. It’s definitely working :)

Does anyone know what this plastic tank is? The small hose on the top wasn’t connected to anything and was pressed flat under the airbox

  6. It's the overflow tank just in case the header tank over pressurised.
    Steve
Ps it should connect to a small spigot at the neck of the water filler cap.

  9. Cheers! Makes sense now as there’s a similar size hose venting to atmosphere on the top of the header tank :upyeah:

  10. The hose on the top is a breather, the hose underneath connects to the header tank filler neck.
My previous post didn't make that clear.

  12. Makes perfect sense. Thanks mate!

Now with the exhaust cam being completely stuck and not budging, is this looking like bad news or will there be some reasoning behind it? Inlet cam moves absolutely fine and valves move freely with no issue on a full revolution. I’m guessing if the exhaust valves and piston clashed, I’d notice it when turning the inlet cam?

  13. Unfortunately it's looking like a bent exhaust valve.

  14. Thought as much! I’ll carry on pulling it apart and have a look. Will report back once it’s all off

  15. Yep, could have been worse though. At the very least, Tel has increased his mechanical knowledge considerably. :) :upyeah:

  17. It’s been a nice learning curve already. Just been looking and I’ll need to get a pulley tool to get those off, remove the backing plate and then the head. They’re nice and easy to work on!

Are the exhaust valves specific to the R, or will others fit? That’s assuming it’s only the exhaust valves

  18. @Android853sp has said he has some spare valves from his R ,when you know what you need I would have a chat with him, he's very helpful and I'm sure he'll do what he can.
