Renthal chain - fitting advice please!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Ian, Mar 7, 2013.

  1. I'm in the middle of fitting a chain, and when I'm using the tool to squeeze the end plate on the link is tightening up and become stiff before the pins are poking through. They are about flush at present, and I'd like to see more proud before I flare the pins? Any advice please??

    thanks, Ian.

  2. Measure across the chain links that are already assembled and then press the link plate on to the same dimension. It's a tight press fit anyhow, before you rivet.

  3. Should the pins not protrude through the plate though?

  4. Yes. Probably get a couple of mm sticking thru.

  5. I'm concerned that if I swing on the tool and really squeeze it it up then the link won't go round the sprocket easily. It's bordering on this now and tries to hold its shape although its easy to pull straight. Equally, wiggling the link makes it tad looser after nipping it up but I'm only just about flush with the pins to the plate. I did a chain previously, not a Renthall, and it had enough for me to be happy with the flare being solid.

  6. Have a check to see if the pins have been pushed back thru the rearmost plate during the pressing on of the outer one. It can happen if the recess in the press tool is too deep.

  7. I'm using the tool without a recessed plate at the back. The pressure is straight onto the pins at the moment...

  8. (That's because I feared I was just pushing the pins though the rear plate)

  9. It should be ok then?? All I can suggest is to measure across the plates already assembled, and compare with your joining link. One other thought...... Double check the number o rings in place. It's not uncommon for the open links to have o rings in place from when the chain was cut to length and if you fit the joining link with fresh rings on to, then it'll be tight....

  10. I'll check that tomorrow, thanks. Ill also get a micrometer round it as well.
    Thanks for your help!

  11. Having Vernier'd across the plates it seems that the link I'm trying to fit is fully home, and it's already 1mm thinner than the adjacent ones. The side plates are noticeably thinner on this one, and the pins shorter. As the link supplied is noticeably smaller than the remainder I'm pretty sure that the link supplied by Renthal is too small, and off the wrong chain.

    Thanks for the advice,

    mm ian.

  12. could be the case....never had it before but you may have say a 520 joining link with a 525 chain????

  13. or a 520 plate in the pressing tool for the slightly larger 525 chain and the slot in it doesn't fit over the two pins...

  14. Andy, your pressing tool always fit those slots.

  15. what you been pressing then cos mine don't.......in fact they stamp 520 or 525 on them, how bigs your slot?

  16. It's not about the size of the slot, it's your tool size that matters.

  17. As a final update, following a trip to a garage, it was a wrong sized link supplied with the Renthall chain. Thanks for all the help folks!
