iPad or iPad2??

  1. Friend of mine is looking for an iPad for his 6yo daughter and naturaly doesn't want to spend a fortune on something that will essentially be a toy.

Does anyone out there have one that they don't use anymore and is in good working order that they'd like to sell? Would be good if it was Wi-Fi and 3G enabled. I think he would be willing to spend IRO £100 or so.

PM me if you can help. Thanks.

  2. Good luck with that. They're still fetching good money on ebay for 1st Gen. 16GB models. Why not go for an android tablet, or is there something specific about ipad he needs?

  3. I bought my lad a BB playbook for £100. Well built, and he uses for interweb, youtube, bbc iplayer, watching vids and listening to music on. The only downside is there's shit all apps out for it. When i know he can look after stuff without dropping it then I will spend the money on something like an ipad.

  4. I suggested an android version but I think kids associate trendy with the iPad. And she is only 6

  5. If I may suggest ....

  6. What the hell does a 6 yr old want with an iPad!! What's next, a phone so she can ring all her friends? Or does she have one already.

  7. You obviously have no knowledge of kids today

My grandson who is only 13 months old and can't walk or talk yet knows how to open his dads iPhone up (even knowing how to put the password in!) so he can get to the photographs and swipe through them all.

At that age I played with cardboard boxes.

  8. The last time I saw my Etch A Sketck was in 1973, my sister had it in her bag when she was knocked down by a car. She broke her collar bone and more importantly, my ETCH A SKETCH!

  12. My daughter has my old iPhone to play games on and a Samsung tablet, yes she's spoilt, she has what I didnt when I was a kid!

  13. Is the correct answer

  14. What the hell does she need 3G for at 6? So that she can play with it in the car instead of looking out of the window? We sell the things. Only about 20% of people or less opt for 3G (but she is no doubt a highly discerning 6 year old).

If I may make so bold (Master Copperfield) what she really needs is an iPad mini. A lot more suitable for tiny hands - less likely to drop it. But you won't find one for £100.

Mind you, they are pretty much toys for everyone unless you're a sales rep.

  15. you couldn't be further from the mark. I have a 3 yr old who knows how to use my iPad. Is he going to get one, is he f@!k. He's going to play outside and with his toys, not sit glued to a computer all day! There's plenty of time for computers later on in life and a a suitable age.

after seeing first hand what my godson was like after his dad bought him an Xbox when he was 7, no way. Not the same mistake for me.

  16. Whilst I understand exactly what you're saying I think that it should be balanced. Technology should be used to promote education and communication. The use of such tools should not overtake everything else in the child's life. It needs to be balanced with normal growing up activities like sport and general playing out.

  17. I couldn't agree more. As an educational tool they're right up there. The mrs has loads of stuff on hers that he occasionally use. I have to confess though on the flight on holiday the iPad was invaluable. He could watch films etc to keep entertained on what could have been a very stressful event!
