London DLR service has driverless trains and no accidents transporting millions of people every year.
On trains which are absolutely packed with hundreds of passengers, the price of a guard is surely a very minor cost -alledgedly £23K p.a which with benifits might be £30K. Maybe £150 per day or 10p per passenger? https://www.indeed.co.uk/cmp/South-West-Trains/salaries Resolving problems with passengers, overseeing disabled people -perhaps with wheelchairs- on and off trains and the once in a lifetime accident where the guard leads the passengers to safety is priceless.
and one day everyone will have to travel like that, because if that's what you want that's what you'll get, what you gonna do when you can't ride yer fleet of bikes
Having used guardless trains for the last 8.5 years that’s just total shit. In that time there have been no incidents I’ve seen. Guards are redundant.
Maybe you aren't disabled? There happily hasn't been a train wreck lately. Just because you haven't seen the guard dealing with problems doesn't mean- to use your words- "shit". I haven't seen the police catch any criminals but that doesn't mean they haven't... Similarly I haven't seen a gas/ water/ electricity repair guy either but since the heating/ taps/ lights work I expect they are doing their jobs!
Once upon a time a guard would be a figure of authority . Most of us would never dare be rude or try anything silly with said guards, and they had control of the train. Unfortunately with the far too prevalent scum on many trains now, the poor guards are too scared to confront these shits and so are far less effective than back in the day. CCTV can be installed in every carriage, and if there is a problem maybe support can be dispatched to the next stop to "help".
So now the guard isn't needed because the passengers are too awful to deal with? Perhaps there needs to be two guards? Or are you living in a bad area as the other poster says there hasn't been any trouble for 8 or more years in his area?
Just a reminder as talks have broken down. https://metro.co.uk/2019/11/21/month-rail-strikes-christmas-set-go-ahead-talks-collapse-11195621/
