Hi Guys, I received new piston circlips and they are slightly different from the ones removed, they don't have the small bend in the end as per pictures. Can anyone confirm if these are compatible. And any advice on inserting them as they will be tight, Thanks
It looks like the type fitted to a 996, if both ends are plain then I first insert the the free ends at 180° to the cutaway in the piston that allows you to lever the clip out, then use a blunt screwdriver to ease the closed end into the groove. But on your pic it looks like one end has a small bend in it (right hand clip)?
I've just had a look in the Haynes manual for 748/916/996 There are a few pictures that show the circlip clearly , and there's no sign of that little angled bend as shown on the left in your pic . I guess there is some advantage in having it there , to make removal and replacement a bit easier ? There are no " handy hints " in that manual as to fitting the new ones , other than what @ducv2 has said , about where the open end should be . I've always done it the obvious way ...... working against the natural " springiness " to get it into the bore , then tapping with a blunted screwdriver to get it seated in it's groove .
Thanks Guys, the small bend on the original locates into the cutaway area of the piston, ill take some photos later and post them. Im in agreement that the clips are inserted with the open ends ( if they don't have this small bend) away from the piston cutaway, but this is not how the original is fitted, and with this clip is the only way it can be fitted.
Hi Guys more pics, has anyone installed this type of clip before, looks like it will slot into the recess in the piston, just looking for conformation that this clip is compatible, thanks.
Yes indeed .... In addition to being good at their intended job , circlips have always had an amazing ability to :- (a) take to the air , and (b) camouflage themselves perfectly on landing . ..... I'm surprised that nobody has come up with a "handy yoke " to make things easier with circlips . We have good ring-slipper tools for use with piston rings ..... ..... and the two situations aren't that different mechanically , are they ?
You are right about the location, it’s an anti-rotation feature and needs locating just like the original clip. If you bought them from a renowned or popular piston source then it’s most likely okay, could you phone them even? It’s one sure advantage of buying original equipment as virtually guaranteed to be okay.
I could imagine a small tube with an inside ID the same as the compressed circlip. The circlip would be fitted into it and a suitable plunger used to push the circlip into place.
Hi chris thanks, the circlips are OE from ducati,i was just a little worried that they were different from ones installed
