  2. That's hard going. To sub 7 minute miles in boots cross country. I think I'd be spewing trying that. I once managed 17.31 in a 3 mile road race years ago and I was totally hanging.
Never a quick runner but was blessed with upper body strength. Not sure I could do 14 'good' pull ups without a bit of training. 60 push ups, yes.

  3. I turn 50 this year, so name down to do both the Brighton and NY marathons. I thought I was reasonably fit to start with as do a lot of x-country and trail running on the South Downs, but now 9 weeks into my marathon training plan and I'm seeing huge improvements to speed and endurance - PB for 10k few weeks back and dropped jeans size - bonus!!!

The trick, as someone said above, is to do something everyday, make it a habit, even if its just 30 mins gentle jog. Mind you, I HAVE to do stretching sessions twice a day as my back and knees simply don't recover like they used to...

  4. Good lad. Good luck with the training!

My brother does Ironman (full sometimes) When I read the program it wasn’t too savage at all but what struck me was the time element. The time side is huge commitment. I simply don’t have that kind of time spare.

  5. Plenty of us auld folks here in and around the fabled "sniper's alley" (approx 45-55?) where we seem (anecdotally) to have friends fall by the wayside or get struck down with fairly shitty stuff. I guess many factors come in to play, from genetics, to how well you have treated yourself, to environmental factors, to sheer good/bad luck. I am of the theory that we can all do something to minimise the probability of being a casualty of "sniper's alley", or at least reduce some of the factors, and like a good few on here consider myself in "decent shape". Played rugby all my life and have the knees, ankles and missing teeth to show for it, but never did any cardio work (wingers don't need cardio!) after breaking my arm a couple of years ago I have stopped playing in anything other than casual veterans games 2-3 times per year.

a friend in the gym who is a 45 year old 4x Iron Man finisher persuaded me to take up triathlon, so after doing a 1/2 olympic distance in September I have started training and intend to do at least 2x full olympic distance this year along with a few 5k and 10k runs and various other swim and bike events.

the change in cardio fitness feels amazing, I can referee teenage rugby and generally keep up with the lads all game long, cycling to work is a doddle, and I have managed to drop from a 34 to 32 waist (still carrying too much bulk for triathlon at 14st and only 5' 8", but tough to break gym habits). I intend to carry on doing stuff to keep me in as good a shape as possible for as long as is possible, as more than anything, I enjoy it and the benefits it brings.

    Pete

  6. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/behind-the-headlines-calorie-guidelines-remain-unchanged

    re-opening this thread,
Is it just me or has anyone else come to the conclusion that current (couldn't find anything later than this ^ ) recommended guidelines for calorie consumption are wildly innaccurate? I can't help thinking that the figures, certainly that relate to me, always err on the safe side for fear of being responsible for under nourishment in extreme cases, although I can't for the life of me think what these could be. With obesity/increasing obesity being such a popular topic right now you would think someone would try and come up with something more accurate.

  9. Blindly excercise 5 days a week for between half and hour and an hour (depending on how knackered i am). Mixture of weights, Jump training, sit ups, pull ups, press ups etc etc. Diet: try to be good during the week, let it slide a bit on the weekend, but on the weekend try to be active in that i wash the cars, do any odd jobs round the house, mow the garden etc etc. Still lightly tubby at 15 stone. I dont go to the gym (just do it at home) stick the telly on in the bedroom which makes the whole time im excercising easier....going to the gym would take out virtually the whole night and cost also....oh 50 years old here - forgot to say...

  12. Wow, that's impressive :):upyeah: I wish I could still run like I used to. I used to love running, I struggle to maintain momentum now. Little injuries lead to fitness loss followed by weight gain.... Aaaaand start again. I'm doing ok at the moment- the secret is to control weight, it makes a big difference.

  14. to lose weight with current nil to low exercise rate, (also from damage Mary) I need to be sub 1500 calories, probably more and it’s nothing to do with following someone else’s fancy diet, it’s dealing with boredom, willpower and not lying to yourself. Edit on that final note, 14 stone/12th Nov.

  15. I'm currently a lazy git after being wiped out by a slipped disc last year - approaching 53 rapidly, have never done much in the way of deliberate activity and eat like a horse.

I must have a well fast metabolism, or what some would call 'lucky b'stard'

I must start eating properly and doing more than walking the dog (small dog so not too onerous). I was always told one day I would balloon up but not happened yet, mustn't get complacent......

  16. Stop eating potatoes, pasta, rice & bread. Get carbs from cereals at breakfast.

    You will lose weight quickly.
