It's just a trend. Started with the work of Foucault and others in post-modernism nearly 40 years ago in academia and spread through the social sciences in the West since then where it is now orthodoxy and has spread throughout media, left politics, many corporations and the public service. But there's nothing new under the sun. 40 years is a blink of the eye in the scheme of things and one thing is certain - orthodoxies always pass and are replaced by new intellectual trends - Marxism used to be the received wisdom in the social sciences 50 years ago (with one Ralph Miliband as one of it's champions).
