748 748 Bp Overhaul - Suggestions Please

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by keith_henson, Jan 2, 2020.

  1. Hello,

I purchased a MY1999 748BP last October with 3 former owners and only 16k on the clock. Its in fairly good nick but me being me have decided that it needs a total strip down to let me fettle the whole bike. There are a few things that I need to do and wondered if there is anything else that I should consider doing whilst its in pieces.

    Current list of things:
    - Replace all coolant hoses and clips as the hoses are not looking too good (black ones have been ordered from fleabay as per another thread on here)
    - Replace the coolant tank as its leaking at the neck of the top up point. Can this be replaced or is the whole tank needing to be replaced?
    - The coolant leak has corroded all the rad and coolant fan. I can get a new fan, but can the rad be rescued by putting it in an ultra sonic bath?
    - Belts and valves are being done next week
    - Replace headlights with Osram Night breakers
    - Replace the rear winkers as both are snapped at the stem attachment point (with original ones)
    - Replace the airbox filters - any recommendations?
    - Fit some 50mm carbon termis
    - Have the ECU remapped by Geoff Baines racing
    - Re-paint the frame due to minor corrosion all over it
    - Re-paint the alloys as there is the usual fingering under the paint which has caused it to flake in places (are both the frame and the rims the same colour code?)
    - Fairings totally re-sprayed (I need the paint code if someone can help - its a red BP)

All fluids, pads and bits will be done as normal. I need some rear pillion pegs if anyone has some laying around spare as the bike didnt come with any when I got it. Ive found some on ebay but thought of asking here first.

Is there anything else I should consider? I have an ST2 as well, with after market clutch cylinder to make it lighter and a few other bits and bobs. such as stainless bolts throughout on calipers and engine. Is this also worth swapping the originals out on the 748?

Any suggestions would be most welcome as I dont intend to strip her back again (not if i can help it!). I have had a good look on the forums but any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks and Happy New Year to all

    Keith

  2. I'm happy to be corrected but I think I've read 50mm are to big for a 748 and you should stick with 45mm.

  3. If you're going that far, you might as well fit new fork seals and oil, it's not much of a job.

  4. Pipercross MPX038 for the air filters. Keep your original frames.

PPG paint code (Anniversary Red): 473.101

And yes, you'll need to replace the entire coolant reservoir.

  5. Dont forget the fuel filter. It maybe worth checking the connections on the loom,a quick clean and spray.Especially the alternator to reg/rec ones.

  11. I’m running 45mm headers and 50mm cans from a 748r and it’s running fine

  12. ahhh, cool. Thanks for this :)

  13. as above, plus thoroughly inspect all pressurised fuel hose within tank for swelling or splitting. Also as above, can't stress more highly about checking Regulator connectors and yellow leads for both corrosion and melting/overheating. Depending on recent service history, it might also be worth checking for closer and particularly opener rocker wear.

  14. @keith_henson, have you spoken to Baines Racing about writing an EPROM for the 50mm end cans ? Last time I looked at people offering that service, Baines was not mentioned. Andy

  15. It was mentioned but hadnt really given it a thought. I live in Shropshire and work in Bristol, so anywhere from Manchester to Bristol that is recommended for an ECU remap would be most welcome.

  16. CJS in Bristol is on your doorstep but I would e-mail or text Chris to check first. Contact by phone is not the best or his preferred option. Andy

  17. Will drop him a mail tomorrow. I found CJS a few weeks back, they seem very good! I am down Bristol next week so might pop in to have a chat.

    Thanks again :)

  20. All being well you’ll be grand. That was by far the worst bit when I did mine after 20 years:(.

All as said above plus swing arm pivot bolt, get it out, de-corroded, greased and replaced.

It’s also worth stripping the clutch down to clear out all the crap that accumulated in there and make sure it’s corrosion free and the plates are within tolerance, it’ll take less than 1 hr first time & less than 30 mins subsequently.

Post lots of pics as you do it, we all love that.

ps. Forgot to mention, touch up paint for the frame you can get from RS Paints and yes the wheels are the same colour, assuming yours is gold bronze frame & 3 spoke wheels.

Regarding painting the fairing, you may find it better to take the parts to a car resprayer who can do an exact colour match with the special camera they have. After 20 years the colour on the panels will have changed a little from the original.
