Satellites, I Hope!

  1. Hi,
I was leaving the house at the ungodly hour of 6 this morning. Beautiful night sky, barely a cloud.
As I was admiring it I spotted a satellite flying west/east above me (Ireland).
Then another behind and in line and another and another. In total eight satellites. Six in line, same gap between them and two slightly off track.
I was wondering if they were part of Elon Musks internet constellation, any experts on here that can shed some light?? ( Only on the satellites,I know wehave some who are experts on lots!!)
    Cheers

  5. It could well of been Starlink and you must have had very good viewing conditions.

I use this: https://www.heavens-above.com/ and https://www.n2yo.com/satellites/?c=most-popular and the sky map link for planets and constellations. I’m not an expert and tbh I don’t really have a clue what I’m looking at most of the time but it fascinated me enough to fork out on a half decent beginners telescope and some decent lenses (which of course I never use)

I quite like tracking the ISS they also have a nice app which shows live footage of the earth spacewalks, launches etc and sends me a notification when it is about to be visible - it’s really quite easy to see on a clear night (orbits every 90 mins) but not always visible

Elon musks 60 satellites look like this

  6. I wonder then did I just catch the end of Musk's satellite chain. We would be be along the same latitude as the Netherlands roughly. Interesting stuff.

  7. You are not alone Tomo. I was walking the dogs one evening a couple of weeks back, the sun had just set, the moon was well risen and a planet, reflecting the light of the setting sun, was visible just at 1 o'clock off the moon. As I was looking and thinking 'I wonder what planet that is tonight, I'll check when I get back', a light. moving at about the same speed a plane at 30,000ft moves across the sky went from west to east. Definitely not a plane, no flashing lights. Then another, then another then another and so on. Clearly satellites reflecting the sun. I counted 15 before the lighting conditions changed and they faded out of view.

Perhaps they are the SpaceX ones. The link above dates to May last year so if they are due to spread out they wouldn't still look exactly like that. The ones I saw had a spacing of 2-3secs between each and were all falling the same trajectory. It's impossible to tell which way the Dutch fella's satellites were going as a) we don't know which way he was facing, north or south, and b) we don't know whether the lens he used reversed them as telescope lens tend to do.

I've been trying to see them again but it's been too cloudy since:(.

@MDUBZ it's not quite a Dark Sky Park where I live but it's dark enough to be able clearly see the milky way in all it's glory on a clear night. I don't know where Tomo lives but Ireland is quite sparsely populated once outside the main cities, so we fortunately get good views of the night sky:).

I would like to know what they are?

  8. a good few years back i was on a bus and spotted an alien invasion. the other passangers spoted it first and where freeking out . it was like hundreds of litle glowing baloons.
it tuned out to be a once in a lifetime meteoroligical event where the clouds are so high in the atmoshpere it catches the suns rays in the other side of the planet.
    impressive stuff.

  15. Well bloody hell..........

......only the other day we were watching TV about UFOs and all the people that have seen them.....

......I wondered why I have never seen one (bearing in mind I don't live far from the UK's Area 51.....Rendlesham Forest)........

.......I guess it's the same phenomenon why people can't take decent in focus photographs and videos of them (like the Loch Ness Monster, too)......

......now if we were talking about ghosts........

.......never seen one of them either.

  17. Not long been.......

    Why are glasses so expensive?

OK, so mine are high refractive index plastic lenses with a blue tint in a rimless frame, but...........

  18. I have found them to be cheaper recently, got a pair last January for about £120, last pair was 2004 for around £300 - hopefully next pair will be free at that rate :D (in 2034)

  19. Managed to see them pass over last night between 21.55 and 22.10.
