Jubilee Clips Coolant System

  1. Repeat of thread on Ducati,MS

I was stripping down the cooling system for a good clean. Looking at the state of the Jubilee clips I decided to replace them (12 in all) I selected Stainless Steel and 35 mm for the lager hoses and 30 for the smaller.

I tightened them until the clip did not move then a half turn. At about 100 deg coolant pissed out of a lot of places.

How tight do they have to be?

Is there a particular style of clip needed?

I put the clips around 10mm back from the end

  2. Same happened to me when I fitted new clips, thought I'd tightened them enough but obviously not. I bough myself one of those special tools for jubilee clips, basically looks like a screwdriver but has a flexible shaft (no sniggering at the back) and an 8mm socket on the end. Saves ruining the slotted head with a screwdriver when they're at a bit of angle. I went around an tightened them all up as tight as I could. It worked.

I can't remember if my hoses were hot, well warm at least, when I did the tightening. They probably were as I'd run the engine up to temp to make sure the fan cut in and the thermostatic valve opened having rebuilt the whole bike. At a guess I'd say I assembled them cold and with the hose material being hard it wasn't tightened enough. Once hot, the hose material is softer and it's arguably possible to get a tighter fit. Just my theory.

  3. Thanks Paul, I was using a 8mm Hex drive, I have a flexi sharft too (is our age man) and can get good access without it. Son of a master plumber ("things should be tight but not murdered up")

  5. So that's where I was going wrong.. I tightened until it stripped and then, back half a turn...

  6. Sure that still works with jubilee clips :D

  7. Johnny, the larger clamps on the 916 and 998/9 motors are 20-32mm (74140251A) and the smaller ones are 16-27mm (74140021A). If you use ones that are at the extremes for the range for each pipe size they will tend to leak around the screw part of the clip due to the distortion of the hose or a failure to clamp either side of the screw part. I think your clips maybe a size too large in each case if they are replacements for the OEM ones.

  8. Umm ok, maybe the case ...they look ok in terms of bend and seal. I ran the bike up to temp tonight and cranked them down. They look OK now, i shall check again later

  9. I never thought about the size thing, I just got a set of stainless from Samco, Denzil is probably spot on.

  10. Ya know when the pipe just needs an extra inch
