odd one, never heard of this... parked the bike up this morning in work, 0800, a colleague was going out at 1pm and the fan was running on the bike ? wasnt in "park", just sat with normal steering lock on. WTF fired up the bike got ORANGE ENGINE LIGHT, but it went out after a few seconds. Ran the bike for a couple of minutes and turned it off, the fan went off..... could this be the fan relay - rang my local ducati tech, without seeing the bike, this is what he thought.. any ideas ? i cant make an egg without putting a hole in the wall...lol , could i fix myself ? ta
Dubs, if the relay is not failing I have seen this happening with poor/dirty contacts on the RH fan connector. Also there can be issues with fans stuck on if the ecu has been spiked when connecting battery the wrong way
cheers guys Denzil, didnt really think of that. i will clean them off tomorrow and poke around.....what could possibly go wrong funnily it was from the right side too, not left. nice one lads, i had a feeling its not sinister, just back from a big and rewarding service, its absolutely flying.....
Thats a negative. I stopped off few places on way home & it was doing it. Got to my duck tech & nothing typical. In garage now parked up , quiet as a mouse. Will take off fairings & clean contacts relating to fan....
With the standard wiring of a 999/749, reversing polarity would be really difficult to do accidentally.
If it is the ecu, there is a simple fix/bodge which iirc, involves bridging two of the contacts in the obd connector but if the dealer did this, they need to fix it properly and replace the ecu.
tks folks @Old rider / @Denzil the Ducati Cheers for that, and funny you say.....read on........ i used the search function and found the two threads below - useful / informative. what i have discovered ( on threads i read below ) is that the 749 / 999 dont have relays (?), they are controlled by the ECU which runs through a 40A main fuse - the only 40A i can see is under the battery compartment which also controls the rectifier. also, @Derek has said " The only way the fans will go on by themselves is either there is a short to ground in the wires between the fan and the ECU or the ECU itself is faulty and is providing the path to ground. " i found these below 2 links from this website here. from 2018 https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/weird-winter-electrics-help-please.57548/ from 2013 https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/999-fan-running-all-the-time.11751/ im bringing the bike to my local guy later this week. I have the battery out as i dont want to burn out the fan motors, as its hard to hear if they are running when on the bike and dont want to drain the battery when its parked up. i will check the fuses later today and report back, in case i spot anything.
quick update..... brought he bike to my dcuk guy here. he reckons it is indeed the ECU as its the earth for the right fan ( i did mention this when dropping the bike off based on what i had read here ) so the upshot is, rather than replace the ECU, he will solder in a wire and relay to basically bypass the short which is being caused and the fans will work as normal when the bike is running hot. will collect it this week.....
