hello. can anyone tell me what the standard sprocket sizes are on a 996? can anyone recommend a good comprimise for my track bike? thanks
15/36 according to the 1999 ducati workshop manual . I'd imagine gearing for a track depends on which track? and how you ride that track.
i'll probably be doing the localish circuits, mallory, cadwell, donnington (these were the sameish gearing on my 4 cylinder bikes) after a comprimise as i don't want/can't be arsed changing sprockets for every track. i'm alright on a bike as i raced for 12 years up until last year, but rode 4 cylinders, (zxr400, zx10r, gsxr1000), example of times on them bikes for mallory, zxr400 low 58's, zx10 mid 55's on a good day. i realise my times won't be relavent on the duke as, its a twin and i'm new to them, i never try as hard on a trackday as i do in a race. the mrs has started doing trackdays with me last year and i'm just after the fun element now and don't want to get to serious about it.
might be worth trying what you have fitted. , I remember my old stock 916 being over geared as std , too long for road use really (cant recall the spec though). The older 916 cases werent that good at surviving high revs so might be worth keeping some revs spare on the straights to avoid unessarry strain on the cases (probably stronger on the 996 but not bullet proof) . I try to keep my current 888 under 9k revs but you might be ok with a little bit more. Lots of stuff on Brad Blacks site bikeboy.org including some gearing stuff.
The stuff you want is listed unde Reports. Gearing page is here BikeBoy.org - Ducati Gearing – Sprockets and Primary Drive Ratios
that's a good ratio for road use and easier on the front sprocket than the 14/36 alternative often chosen as a mod - you should have 2 more links (98) in your chain.
Just fitted an extra two teeth on the rear of my 996sps ,kept the standard amount on the front and it has made a noticeable difference on the power delivery , as someone said earlier it is geared to long as standard so this is a good compromise for track days Gav.
