HELP! - Removing 600SS Side Stand

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by AFPU, May 7, 2013.

  1. Might be a silly question but......how does the side stand come off on a 600SS? Mine has the allen bolt with the large apron on the outside and a nut on the inside. However, when I try to undo the allen bolt whilst holding the nut on the inside all it does is turn and periodically tighten and then loosen off. I do not seem to be able to undo either of them and undoing the actual stand bracket that is bolted to the engine seems to be done up unbelievably tight that I am unlikely to get that off!

So are the two (the allen bolt and the thread that the nut is on) connected or am I missing something as I need to improve the situation somehow as the stand is a little floppy and the whole arrangement does not fill me with confidence as my newly refurbished pride and joy will be resting on this one element.

Any guidance.help as to how it comes off etc would be much appreciated.

  2. Take it to your dealer. They should know how to do it. Maybe.

  3. Not really an option at present as the bike is semi stripped and not mobile.

  5. Good idea but have you ever tried? Space is a bit limited for that but it had crossed my mind!

  6. Well build it back up...............and ride it there. Or rent a van............... or borrow a trailer.................. or ask if they will collect........... any more help needed feel free to ask....................

  7. I think he might be meaning that for your neck..............

  8. The side stand bolts are notoriously difficult to undo, and sometimes have to be chiselled off.

  9. Which bolts exactly.........one where the hex head one is (which has now gone from mine); one you can see; or the taperey thing by the spring?

If it is the one near the spring, I'm surprised it has a nut on the back.....neither of my two stands have a nut and the parts manual doesn't show one either.

I reckon someone has had a sticky stand nut before and cut it off, then run a bolt through from the back into the tapery one on the outside........I would not recommend cutting the outside one off......it is a turned item that includes a boss which goes into the sidestand bushing.

  10. The tapered fixing on the front. On the back is a nut on a thread, which I supposed was the bolt carrying on through. However, having seen a OEM side stand bolt on ebay it looks like is it not a bolt but has a thread on the back that goes into the side stand. Therefore, I have no idea what the nut on the stud at the back is doing. But one thing is for sure, both go round without coming off!

If I could get the bracket fixings undone I would replace the whole side stand assembly. But they won't budge.

  11. Blow torch on the engine where the stand bracket bolts are....they get Loctited on (I haven't Loctited mine since it was susch b****..d to get off)............or cut the nut off the back of the stand pivot..........I have just had a quick look at mine and I think you could get a small hacksaw at it.....or borrow a nut splitter from someone..........you could always cut lengthways through the nut and whatever bolt is in there......if it is a bolt or threaded rod going into the outside tapery nut, it should be M8 IIRC.

  12. If I can get the side stand arm off then all well and good....I am happy to leave the bracket and, providing all is OK, fit a new side stand arm etc. It will be this weekends job.

  13. Depending on what has occurred to your stand, if you are careful getting whatever is in there out successfully, you may be able to simply tap a (M8?) thread into the bracket aluminium to take an HT allen bolt from the back which you can Loctite (or better)......I wouldn't use stainless bolt though unless it is very high quality.

  14. late on the scene here, but am confused AFPU - Firstly, are you saying that you cannot remove nut from pivot bolt because you can't get a purchase on the Allen head**? Only going by memory but it's (obviously) a shoulder bolt and I think the 'back' face of the bracket was tapped with the nut at the back acting as a locknut. The tapped part often gets sloppy if allowed to come loose/overtightened etc and can end up being totally stripped which is possibly what has happened here. Anyway, still need to understand ^ **

  15. I wonder if the pivot bolt is the older "suicide" type. I've seen it where people chop the top of the bolt off to allow the side stand to stay down, but render the bolt non-removable.

  16. That's what I have (well, I have both) see pic above....

  17. I also have a modified suicide type, but Rich at Louigi Moto had the sense to push the hex all the way though the bolt before he lopped the top off, so now it can still be removed if needed.

  18. I put flats on mine......you can just see them in the pic.

  19. How can you "push" a hole..........................through a bolt...................? Doesn't make sense. Pic needed.

  20. With a tool that cuts a hex shaped hole. :) No idea what Rich used, maybe it was a regular hex socket pushed into the cheese that constitutes the metal on these bolts. I do remember him saying that it had to be done before grinding off the tip as this gives the "tool" something to sit in. Anyway, here's what it looks like.
