Computer Nerds, I Need Help.

  1. Let's see if I can enplane this so you understand.
    My wife and I both have BT internet e-mail accounts and use the same computer.
    My son has an Outlook internet account and my daughter has a Hotmail account both live away so use there own computers.
    If my children send me an e-mail with an attachment it arrives as a .DOCX which i can open and see.
    If they send the same e-mail to my wife it arrives as a WINMAIL.DAT and will not open at all.
    As if that isn't confusing enough if I forward the same e-mail received by me from the children to my wife she receives it as a .DOCX which she can then open.
    I presume the problem is in the wife's e-mail settings somewhere but where.
    Any help gratefully received.

  2. Sounds like the problem is how the email has been sent.

  3. Alan that was our first thoughts but it is sent exactly the same to me and the wife yet we receive it differently.

  5. The problem is certainly at your wife's end.

    Does BT Internet have a Help page to assist you with setting up your BT Internet email account? The last time I had an ISP-provided email account, I was provided with resources on their website to assist with setting up email clients correctly.

    What client do you use to read emails? Web-based, Outlook, something else?
     
  6. Sounds odd, had a similar problem at work and turned out to be how it was being sent.

    just had a quick google and all the results are for the sender.
    Microsoft page says nothing the receiver can do about it.

  8. Steve, on your shared computer, is MS Word (or the app you use to read DOCX files) available to All users? Or just yourself? Do you share a logon to that computer or have separate logons?

  9. A bit tedious to do, but can you (or have you) compared your outlook settings to your wife’s ?

  12. So you have two mail accounts accessed via the same Outlook install? Two mailboxes appear in Outlook?

    For certainty - are you talking about Outlook, the MS Office programme, or Outlook, the web interface?

    Still, I can see why you are stumped.

    I assume you and your wife have separate logons for your Outlook accounts - obviously - so you are pretty much left with delving into the email settings on her account and comparing each one with yours. Good luck.

    At least this will keep you off the forms for a time!

  15. Tried opening a webmail page (both ends) and sending it that way....that way you cut out the outlook client...

  17. Steve, something nagging at the back of my head here.

    Can you get your son to open the document that your wife cannot receive directly, get him to change it slightly - add an extra full stop or something - save it with a new name and then send it to your wife directly without sending it to you?

    Edit:
    Vague memory from many years ago - had a situation where some people could read an Excel doc stored on the Network but others got an error message, saying the file was corrupt.

    IIRC, the answer was to copy/paste the contents of the Excel file to a brand new file - everyone could then access it.

    No explanation for the fault, only a workaround.
