749 749 Buying Advice

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by chazzmonkey, May 18, 2020.

  1. Good Morning

I have perused the encyclopedia of information here on the 749 but, cannot seem to find a definite answer to a couple of specific questions or, a decisive busting of a couple of myths surrounding the 749 which I would like prior to biting the bullet and finally getting one for myself. They are just such a stunning bike and, from what I've read, their owners really love them. (My choice of the classifieds when the time comes would be a latter model, 2004-onwards 749S Biposto in red, to be specific).

I have started this thread here in the hope of putting an end to that lack of knowledge and, actually, in the hope of getting a clear answer from those with some actual expertise on the matter rather than someone whose mate had a neighbour whose brother test rode one in 2003.

    1) What is the real-world mileage that 749 owners are getting from their bikes? Quotes I've seen on various forums and pages range from under 80-miles per tank up to 140-miles, with MCN giving a range of 150-miles per tank on their dedicated review but, really, on a general ride across all riding environments, how often are you filling up? (I understand this is fairly subjective and based on a number of variables such as remapping, types of road, types of fuel, etc. But, an indication of range would be nice prior to buying)

    2) Does the 749 dash really hate water as much as people say? Will I need to run from any small downpour or, never ride in the rain to avoid a catastrophic ECU failure as warned by a number of different sources on a number of different forums and pages?

    3) Is stalling in cold conditions at every Red Light really an issue? A few comments have been made about this problem and difficulty starting when cold, is it an easily fixed fuelling issue or, will it be something to get used to and prepare for during ownership?

    4) Side stand. Some say that the side stand bracket can fail. This was also reported on the VisorDown buying guide. Is this something to prepare for or, just a couple of unlucky owners?

Thank you to anybody who replies with answers or, opinions on the questions above. I understand many people post questions without reading threads or searching the forum which causes some frustration on occasion but, I have tried to find the answers to these specific questions online and here on the forum with no real joy, hence the new thread.

  2. No.
No. A properly set up bike does not stall.
If the mounting bolts are loose the bracket may damage the casing. The heavy lean angle on some bikes is caused by the steel bracket gradually denting the aluminium stand itself. This can be fixed in a few ways.
