  1. @BobTheBounder For wind noise, buy a foam cover or "windslayer" off Ebay - they are cheap and have similar effect to a dead cat on a mic - the GoPro 6, 7, as well as the 8 I think have 3 mics so you need the complete cover. Also, in Settings on your camera (easiest via the App) turn Protune "on" and set it to "wind only" - this will also assist.

  2. Cheers Brouny mate, windslayer on the way, mine is the 7 black btw, and did have set on wind only :upyeah:

  3. @BobTheBounder I find I’m getting just over an hr of recording, I usually get 4 x 4Gb films, each one being 17.5 mins long. I’m filming at 60fps, 1080p Wide 16:9. I don’t have wifi on.

One thing I have learned is how to turn the damned thing on/off. Unbelievably there are no instructions with it or else I’m incredibly dense. Anyway I was just pressing the big red button on the top to turn it on which of course means, as Quickcapture is enabled by default, it starts recording immediately. I have since found out you can turn it on/off with the Mode button on the side and it won’t start filming right away. Pressing the big red button on the top then starts it filming. I had to find a GoPro 101 vid on YT to learn that :(.

Anyway I was out again today and using my new found skills and dexterity with the on/off button and start/stop recording button, I managed to make it last for most of the 4hrs I was out. I simply turned it on and recorded a stretch of road/vista I wanted too then stopped and turned it off until the next bit worthy of being recorded.

I will get some extra batteries for it as well.

Regarding wind noise, I’ve a windslayer on order but I did follow Brouny’s advice and have now set the Protune setting to wind so I’ll see how much of a difference that makes when the editing over the next few days.

  4. That's weird mate, I have same settings, i.e. 1080p 60fps wide and each 3.76GB file is 11:46 of which I get 4 and I small as the battery runs out of around 7 mins. I have now switched off wifi and gps, screen off after 1 min, screen brightness down to 40% and any other non essential bollox like voice command, will try when have a chance, have ordered windslayer, got two more batteries. Still trying to find small lanyards that are soft enough not to rub on the bodywork but strong enough to hold camera and mount if they come loose!

  5. WiFi and GPS being off will make a significant difference to battery life :upyeah:

  6. I’ll re-check the exact length of my previous recordings later today & let you know.

Re the lanyard thingy, I found the only place to secure something is through the bottom hinge of the cage the camera is locked into. There’s a tiny gap there just big enough for the smallest of cable ties. So I’ve a cable tie in there and it’s that that my other cable ties/lanyard are attached to.

  7. @BobTheBounder just coming back to you about clip length, I checked the vids I'd shot and sure enough all vids up to Thursdays were 4gb and 17.6mins long. Thursdays recordings were 3.61gb and 11.7mins long. The only difference I know of which I made was I set the Protune setting to wind before Thursday's recordings, whether that has made a difference to length of not I don't know.

  8. For the benefit of any readers in the future who also are starting out with a GoPro (or anything similar) with regards to the sound recordings I have decided to purchase a Zoom H1n as suggested by @Bumpkin . Here's my logic:

    - The Hero 7 Black only has a USB-C input - all external mics are 3.5mm jack
    - This necessitates an adapter 3.5mm jack to USB-C and I can only find one that is GoPro approved although even that isn't sold by GoPro who don't seem to offer anything.
    - It needs to be GoPro approved as I have been advised anything else will not work with a GoPro regardless of what the seller tells you - this information may be not 100% accurate but I don't want take the risk.
    - The GoPro approved adapter is £49 and is almost the same size as the camera itself:astonished: plus i would need to purchase a mic as well.
    - Research on some other forums/websites indicates there is a high chance of latency with any sound recordings made by an external mic ie they lag behind the video and are out of sync. This has to be corrected in post-production.
    - The Zoom H1n is about the size of a mobile phone and is highly recommended for its ease of use and sound recording quality plus i can get from Thomann.de for €88.
    - The Zoom does not need an adapter it is a stand alone piece of equipment that can be fixed anywhere I want on the bike.
    - Admittedly I will have to sync the sound recording with the video but it appears I'd have to do that anyway even with a mic plugged into the GoPro via the adapter, so no real detriment there.

I'll post how I get on in the future once it's arrived and I've had chance to use it.

  9. Might be worth asking that Youtube LambChop bloke how he does his sound. Like or loath his content but the sound is good!

  10. The higher the quality you use in settings the higher the battery draw! The one thing to note as I've not read the thread is that you need seriously good quality memory cards for fast read/write process.

You probably need V60/V90 speed cards.

  11. Upgrade your memory to match the devices capability.

I had a quick scan over the thread & as good as the devices you buy are. You must pair them with the highest (fastest) quality memory cards for excellent footage. Anything 'cheap or free' usually means okay footage. Devices do have maximum read/write speeds so you don't need to spend £300 on a memory card but you can. Yes the memory card can be as expensive as the device you are using to create memories to share & recant over.

What I would emphasis is that on your holiday, road trip or nipping to the coast. You only get one chance to collect & store data. So spend good money on a memory card & it'll pay for itself in no time.

  12. Vey useful, thanks. Just checked and the card that came with the device was a v30, I'll make a note of that for the future.:upyeah:

  13. Just got this one guys, 128 version of the 64 that came with cam, both are ideal for the hero7 black apparently.
Paul, I had the protune set at wind only from unboxing as recommended, seem strange to affect footage file size, wonder when windslayer arrives can return to a normal sound setting and gain 6mins of footage per file!

As regards mic, with thinking about gunZ post, I'm sure LCR has separate audio and mixes in editing, maybe the way to go fellas? Seperate audio one mic in yer helmet and one picking up termi sound emissions then all mixed with footage!

  14. Another thought, ifn we gonna go separate audio route, is it possible to turn of audio completely? With a possibility of further increase in video length per file?

  15. Now you're going to have to get a clapperboard to do the sync, and take it riding :p

  16. Shite forgot that devices usually have a maximum recognizable memory card size also. I think most are 128GB now but some might be larger.

ps: @Keith_P always had the clappers

  17. Hmm, Id swear my last vids are noisier for wind now I’ve protune set for wind  am still waiting for the windslayer to arrive as well - China’s a long way away :(

  18. Yup still waiting for windslayer, from China, though they said they have uk stock in Leicester. Been through camera settings and can't find option to not record or turn off audio, doesn't mean its not there just canna find it, hopefully gonna have a go tomorrow also switched off protune.
Paul thought anymore on seperate audio?

  19. Other than ordering the Zoom H1n no Bob. Although I’ll still get the GoPro audio one of the features of iMovie (I have a Mac and iMovie is free on that) is I can split out the original audio from the video, delete the audio and then by simply dragging a media file from my music library, add in whatever audio I want. It’s then easy enough to visually sync the 2 on the screen. Apologies if I already posted this before but it’s how I did this

I’ll do the same with the audio output file from the Zoom once I get it.

  20. Will be interested to hear how you get on. Have you ordered the new mk2 version?

If you're going to use the internal X-Y mic then you might want to invest in a dead cat as well. When I originally suggested it I was, IIRC, saying use it in conjunction with a lav mic. My mk1 model does suffer from handling noise when using the X-Y mic unless you're very careful or have it mounted on a mini tripod. Not sure how that'll translate when mounted somewhere on a moving motorcycle. Let's see how you get on.
