Wonder if anybody might be able to help. A mate of mine wants to build a special with a 900 air-cooled engine he bought some years ago. Does anybody know the differences between a 1999 Monster frame & a similar year SS frame, in particular the rear suspension mounts. We seem to think that the Monster top mount might be off-set to the right whereas the SS's top mount is in the centre, but we're not sure. He'd like to use a single sided swingarm too so if anybody knows what might fit, with or without any modifiying any help anybody can offer would be really appreciated. Thank you.
He only has an engine at the moment. His intention is for it to look like the Monster style rather than sports/racer style, hence him looking at Monster frames. As he also wants a single sided swing arm & because that era, (1999 ish) the Monster has a vertically mounted rear shocker that also possibly would make the Monster frame a better option. Plus it would come with a V5 & save having to go through the SVA testing.
Basically he likes the style/look of the earlier Monster trellis frames as opposed the later frames, which as we understand are two part & use the engine as a stressed member.
Late monster frames s4rs, s4r, s2r etc are 1 piece and can use air cooled engines and sssa from those bikes
@CAT3 I have an ST2 frame with v5 if that is any use. I think it was based on the 916 frame but I'm sure more knowledgeable members on here will be able to confirm or correct that.
It is based on the monster style frame. Looks similar, depends what tank etc you want to use and what look you need. The only sssa you can use are the monster ones, the 916, 1098 ones wont fit
Isn’t the SS different in the air box area as well as the rear subframe and shock mount: it runs diagonal where monster runs either with hoop or up/down like a 916
Cheers for that info, tank wise I would imagine he'll get one made to suit rather than make something existing fit. He wants it to look modern as in materials used, CNC parts, 3D printed parts, carbon fibre, etc, upside down forks, high spec brakes, etc, but to have a ye olde air cooled engine !
When you say the 916/1098 single sided arms will not fit, can I ask is that they won't bolt straight in, or they would need some sort of machining or even with some machining they are just not suitable ?
They are narrower where they fit to the engine. The sbk arms have bearings in the arm, the monster has bearings in the engines. The sbk arms are supported/clamped between the engine and outrigger on the frame.
I guess you could machine the bearing bosses off the aircooled engine to the width of a sbk engine. You would need to set up the offset for chain alignment. The shock mount on the frame may also need flipping over, to align with the sbk shock mount
