Hi Guys, hope someone can help me!!! thanks, I have had my 848 for couple of years and it has always been a slow starter, by that i mean when you press the start button there seems to be a bit of a delay before it slowly starts to turn and then fires up, but now when i turn the ignition on and press the start button absolutely nothing and i noticed my headlights go off, any idea`s please cheers, ps my battery is 100% good
The starter cables are rubbish and deteriorate. You can buy a set of uprated cables from @Exige on here or make your own. The difference with decent cables is night and day. I suspect you have a bad earth as well and I would think your battery might be a bit suspect too if the headlights dim when you press the starter.
Agree with Akorenika but it could be the battery. Easy to change and if the one you've got is a few years old then you'd not be wasting your money.
As it was always slow turning the starter I think it's time for new cables in any case. Just my opinion of course.
As already said, fit new cables. If you go for a new battery (I personally would) to replace what may be an already fairly old one then get one with the highest cranking amps you can find.
Hi Guys, Thanks for all the replies, i am quite sure its not the battery as its only a year old, thou i don't ride the bike as much as i would like to, it is always left on drip, But the cable upgrade sounds promising, so i have just ordered the kit and will let you all know how it goes, big thanks guys
Gel batteries don't like being left on "drip" charge for prolonged periods. The cables will help for sure, but I'd get the battery checked with a load test. the headlights are turned off by the ECU when starting to maximise power available for the starter.
Hi guys, well still dead when i push the start button, i put the upgrade ignition lead kit on, i have checked all the fuses in the fuse box and all good, i had my battery disconnected for 24 hours and when it went back on the drip charge the green light came on within 30 seconds so i would guess the battery is good, any other idea`s as to what it could be??? thanks
Is there anything that appears odd with your idiot lights? Do some go on & off when you switch your lights on? Indicators working etc? Display not reading “Hi”? These are symptoms of a failing reg/rec. I’ve had two of them go on my 1098 but it hasn’t stopped the bike firing up any time
Hi Symon, thanks for the reply, good call but i did have the Regulator / Voltage Rectifier go on me just at the end of last year on the way back from bsb at brands, and everything you described happened, well embarrassing as they had to close a lane down on the A12 to rescue me, but now when i turn it on everything works as it should, but just getting nothing out of the start button. thanks
Hi Spears, well, i done what you said, more through accidental than meaning to do it!!! as i was taking the wires of the solenoid i must of bridged it with my ratchet, sparks everywhere and a whirl from my starter motor, anyway changed my underpants and then put a multimeter on the solenoid, which read 1, according to youtube it should read 1 to start with and the go to 0 or 0.2 when start button is pushed and mine stayed at 1,, so if you bridge the solenoid and it turns the starter motor does that mean the solenoid is bad,, thanks
Yes, the solenoid is basically a switch activated by the starter button. Is the little plug in the back of the solenoid clean and secure. Steve
Hi Steve, thanks for the reply, yes all wires seem to be ok, So well pleased if its just the solenoid, as this has been an on going problem with pressing the start button and it not always working 1st or 2nd time, i guess this must of been the solenoid slowly breaking down, i read that the corrosion builds up over time and stops it bridging, well ordered a new one and will update when fitted,, Thanks
When you fit the new one, disconnect the battery earth lead first, it's good practice when removing the battery or working on electrics that need the battery disconnected, earth off first, earth back on last. Steve
yes cheers Steve, funny enough i learnt that lesson today as i was taking of the positive cable off the solenoid first, hence the sparks and the bridging, still helped solve the problem this time, but lesson learnt!!!!
Hi Guys, thanks for all your help, fitted new starter solenoid and what with the upgrade ignition leads the bike now starts better than it ever has, cheers
