999 Starter Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by West Cork Paul, Aug 28, 2020.

  1. A friend’s bike.
I know these things are difficult to tell from a badly shot video but what are people’s thoughts as to may be the issue please?

It was running, wasn’t used for a couple of weeks, he went to start it and now it makes an awful noise & won’t start.

I have my own idea but thought I’d see what others think.

  2. Sprag clutch

  3. What's your idea?

  4. I had the sprag clutch go on my Darmah years ago (at the Bol). From what I remember, I got a the starter motor spinning like mad but not turning the engine over. Yours could be the sprag being not quite as knackered as mine was. I would try taking out the spark plugs so there is no compression, and trying again. Then you will know if the sprag works with no compression. I would then put back one plug and seeing what it does - and then put both back.

I never fixed it myself and so no idea on how easy it is to DIY. Any Ducati dealers anywhere near? I guess not:(

  5. Sprag aka starter clutch

  6. This is the issue. Nearest Ducati specialist is 5 hrs drive. Looks like we’ll have to fix it ourselves.

So if it is the sprag, that’s gonna be,
    oil out
    water out
    LHS crankcase cover off
    Alternator off
    Flywheel off
    Starter clutch out
    New one on
    Flywheel back on
    Alternator back on
    LHS crankcase cover back on
    Fill with water & oil

Any tricky bits we need to watch out for?

  11. You’ll need a flywheel holding tool and a torque wrench that goes up to 300+ Nm (can’t remember the exact figure).
Get a new retaining nut too.

  12. Plus a puller for the left hand case and some loctite 270 for the new nut, an impact gun such as the Clarke and a tube of Ducati instant gasket or equivalent. Also does it have decent power cables for the battery, solenoid, starter and most important the main earths?

  13. Just checked my 749 workshop manual - it appears that the nut is only 270Nm.
My confusion was with the 1098 which is 330Nm.

  14. and don't forget that the 30 mm socket is a deep one Paul, you wouldn't have one in your average tool kit.

It’s on hold at present as a) he has to sort out some transport to mine and b) he’s considering selling it as is :(.
