Second Hand Carbon Wheels?

  1. Well, would you buy a set? If so, what to look for (other than the obvious)?
    Can you/should you get them scanned before use and if so by who?
     
  2. When I bought my BSTs a few years back, I just had a good look all over them. But these did come off a show bike with very little miles on it. Not sure I’d buy a set without knowing the person or history.

  3. As long as you check them without tyres on I don't see a problem. I bought my dymags 2nd hand 10 years ago , sold um and bought um back been on my 996 for 4 years now.

  4. Write to the suppliers directly and ask if they have any "seconds quality" wheels available. You will probably be very pleased by the answer.

  5. Great idea! If you’re happy with a slight fault in the look but the structure is still ok then could be a good way to save a few quid

    BTW hps do 0% finance on their wheels at the mo

  6. Yes quite a few quids. More than enough to pay for spraying gold and dinner in a great ristorante (wearing a mask of course).

  9. Wheels are your connection to the ground at 140mph. I’d need to be 100% that the bargain was worthwhile....

  13. I’d want to know the history intimately and probably want them xrayed/scanned whatever they do as well.
     
  14. Yes. The history I’m fine with. As with the obvious dinks or cracks etc. It’s can you get them scanned I don’t know.
     
  15. I’m pretty sure @chizel bought some magnesium wheels contingent on them being ok when xrayed. He’d know where & who. If only we knew where he is (and who he’s with:joy:).

  16. As a simple test you could try "tap testing" the wheels. You'd need a metallic object with a polished, rounded end & go all over the wheel tapping the carbon surface. Obviously not hard enough to cause damage, any defects such as cracks/delamination would be indicated by a different sound than the surrounding area.
    As for other forms of tests a visual inspection should show up any chips, scratches, etc & you could do a tap test on any of those areas.
    If you have ANY doubt, walk away.

  17. My rear BST was pre owned. Still payed a fair wedge for it. Checked it over on receipt and was in excellent visual condition. It’s now done a few thousand miles. Still looks mint.
    I believe BST can x-ray them for you; return postage to/from S. Africa may be a bit steep. Plus you’d want to pack it extremely well for the trip.

  18. In Formula one all the structural carbon parts get NDT'd with ultrasound and then proof loaded at intervals. I'm not sure who would check wheels, what I do know is that we had many a failure while proof loading of parts that where cleared by visual and ultra sound. Makes a hell of a bang when a carbon wishbone let's go.

  19. So do you buy then, cheap, get the checked, expensive, and they break what will you do? If you are happy with their look and the owners story, may as well just crack on ( ;) ) and get them fitted

  20. Probably fine mate. It was just my personal choice to go new. I got messed about by an Ebayer, sold me them then I was gazumped by a higher bidder. So I just bought new.

    Turned out really sweet because said Ebay wanker contacted me back again as the gazumper obviously pulled out. It was nice telling him where to go.... :)
