Second Hand Carbon Wheels?

  1. I have bought several items off the owner and he seems pretty straight. I think visual and tap test could be the way to go. We will see.

  2. Very true. Though at 140 there's a whole host of things that can cause catastrophic results, not least the guy ahead or behind. Or in Barry Sheenes case the rear tyre or gear box. None of these could be forseen with xrays!

  3. Tap test is only really effective on very thin laminates such as used on honeycomb sandwich panels (tasty!).
For monolithic structural laminates (wheels) the recommended technique would be ultrasonic a or c scan NDT.

    Failing that...visual and crossed fingers.

  4. So, fingers crossed it is then.

  5. I think carbon wheels is like the IMS of the Porsche world: lots think it’s a ticking time bomb and they all fail, where in reality very few do and it’s not catastrophic when it does

  6. And I’d definitely put my trust in a set of BSTs before old magnesium wheels.

  7. I wonder if Dymag would check them......

  8. I’ve seen a carbon o/e wheel for an S1000RR split its lacquer; which was a defect but did not fail or let any air out. It just looked poor quality control. BMW had a few that were replaced under warranty. The track only S1000RR has carbon wheels by TKCC; which are are a different supplier.

  9. The wheels I am considering are BST.

  10. Well I'd stay below 140 to be safe.

  11. I’d have thought you’d stay off a bike altogether to be safe ;)

  13. Yeah there is always that. A few more weeks and my safety will improve dramatically. I'm just a "fair weather kinda guy" and that means no freezing cold or salty road rides.

  14. Worth considering that they only have to let you down once!! I had a set of dymag magnesium on that looked fine and thought were ok! They let me down just the once! Unfortunately it was on hanger straight and it was considerably faster than 140!!! You can I’m sure guess the carnage that followed!, get them checked or go alu would be my advice!

  15. They would be for track bike so considerable forces.

  16. That’s true jack and I’m sure they will be fine but I’d still get them checked just for you’re own peace of mind! A good friend of mine has ran bst carbons on track only and he’s had them on for years with no problems so I’m sure they’ll be ok! I’ve ridden his bike and the difference with them is incredible!

  17. So, if I get them where can I get them scanned? I googled it earlier and found the cycle shop per @Gerr post but TBH I don’t think a cycle shop would give me too much confidence.

  18. Reality Motor Works, Bristol. Mag and steel wheels. No mention of CF. :(

  19. It’s worth giving dymag a ring! I know they’re bst but a carbon wheel is a carbon wheel! Also worth ringing HPS as they are one of the main suppliers of carbon wheels!
