Pets And Their Unusual Taste In Foods

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Zhed46, Nov 4, 2020.

  1. My Iggy absolutely loves carrots.

His usual feed was cooked chicken, dried salmon cubes, rice, a bit of dried dog food and a few spoonfuls of home made bone broth/stock/jelly to give it some moisture. About a week ago the girlf accidentally dropped some carrot on the floor while cooking and he wolfed it down, so I’ve started slicing about half a raw carrot into his meals. Even though the food is all mixed together he used to pick out his favourite bits - the salmon, then the chicken, followed by the rice and then the dried food - but now he starts with the carrot and crunches away on it merrily until it’s all gone before moving on to the salmon.

He also loves swede and he uses one as a chew toy/ball that gradually gets eaten over the course of a few days. Every morning when he comes downstairs with me, despite him clearly bursting for a pee, he always makes sure he checks that it’s around before he’ll go out.

What unusual/unexpected tastes does your pet have?

  3. Our cat likes most stuff but tends to go a bit mental for left over prawn crackers from a Chinese takeaway whenever we have one, and Stilton cheese for some bizarre reason :joy:

  4. Both our dogs like carrots.

We had a springer spaniel, his favourite food was everything, including taking food off the kids plates given the chance, and cardboard and wood - pulled a load of skirting board off along with 2 uprights from the stairs and ate them. Beautiful dog otherwise though.

  8. My dawg will grab most things if we aren't watching him......
Once in a blue moon I might have some porridge for breakfast.....this morning the dog did.....(but the cat licked the crumbs out of the bowl).
The other day he took a new pack of butter off the worktop, had that too......had the squits throughout the afternoon and evening.
He likes cooked cabbage; cooked dwarf beans; raw carrot (grated); sardines and anything that has meat including curries.
He used to eat oranges; apples and bananas, but not now unless they are in a meal.
A boiled egg yolk will be gobbled after he has surgically removed all of the white (then he reluctantly eats the white.....funny that, I can't stand the white either).
He found an old pigeons egg last week......that had me in stitches......you should have seen his face when he crunched the shell........he stopped as soon as he tasted what was inside (it stunk like hell).
Luckily he isn't into eating dog or cat shite; but he once found a fox poo which was rigid and quite long......carried it proudly for about 50 metres, probably thinking it was a stick.

  9. Haha! :joy:

Post of the thread so far.

Iggy has some other unusual tastes:

Horse manure (I've caught him eating it twice)

Chicken Madras (each mouthful is usually followed by a sneezing fit).

Wood (we've lost two of the knobs on our bedroom chest of drawers because he's eaten and swallowed rather than just chewed them).

He also prefers to drink water out of anything but his drinking bowl. In fact his preferred source is licking it off my shins after I've had a shower or bath.

  10. Mine will stand up against the worktop and drink water from a washing up bowl in the sink.....luckily we have two sinks, one of which permanently has a full bowl of cold water in it.

He got the idea after watching the cat jump up on the worktop to drink from the bowl.

I will see if I can get a photo of him doing it.

  11. I think horse manure and cow sh1t is a common one for dogs. All of mine have been partial. The vet said there's no harm in them eating it and I'm sure I once read it was good for their gut.

My first dog, a Beagle, would eat anything including bars of soap if he could reach them. That did make him poorly but he still did it given the opportunity.

  12. Are you sure the fvcker didn't start your fire the other day ? Toasted wicker ?

  13. Dogs are living dustbins/rubbish disposal units, but at the end of the day they're carnivores.
Finding a veggie dog is about as rare as finding (back in their day) a veggie T Rex.
My dogs who've I've always walked without a lead have always stayed by my side all loved Pock Scatchings, of which I always carried a bag of in my hip or thigh pocket.
Perhaps that's why they've all always walked to attention beside me?
I very much doubt that any vegetable would have the same effect.

  14. It was actually very nearly toasted Spaniel as he was locked in his crate only 3m away from the fire. However, he probably would have enjoyed it because if I let him he will quite literally sit in the hearth only inches from a blazing fire. He also does this really funny thing where if I tell him to stop or I push him away from the fire, he checks to see if I’m still watching and if he thinks I don’t have my eye on him, he shuffles forward a couple of inches before slyly glancing over to make sure the coast is clear and then doing it again until he’s almost got his chops in the flames.

That was taken when he was a puppy but he still does it if I take my eye off him.

  15. I had a St Bernard that loved mandarins and feijoas. But only if I peeled them first! Wouldn't touch oranges but mandarins? Couldn't get enough!
