  1. My Mum (and my Grandmother's family) was from Sharpness and taught in Berkeley school on the 40s.:upyeah: ..... and it's correctly pronounced BErk-lee not BARK-lee btw ;)

  2. Yes, as in tree bark - or Mary Hinge barking properly with none of this "woof, woof" shite!

But............... more importantly......... I had my leg bandages changed at the Surgery today AND I got a 'flu jab - which I thought was bad shit as my sister had one years ago when they first started and I thought that they gave you a bit of 'flu to immunise you, after she was ill. I was told that this was ill-informed tosh (which I do) and so I got it.

I did feel a bit of a prick...

  3. You know that Sharpness docks did feature in the first series of "His Dark Materials" as well as the Gloucester/Sharpness canal and Berkeley Castle?

  4. Nope. Didn't know that :upyeah:

  5. Nope. Not as in tree 'bark'........Berk as in 'work' or 'lurk'. At least, that's how my Nan always insisted (and she was about as local as you can get).

  6. I think that I read somewhere the name may of came from tree bark, but it is disputed, and I think you're right. "Berkeley" as in "burkeley",

  7. According to Wiki, "Berkeley was first recorded in 824 as Berclea, from the Old English for "birch lea".[3]"
