Pwm To Control Heated Jacket?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by CRYSTALJOHN, Dec 24, 2020.

  1. Lost my controller for my EXO2 heated vest. Seems impossible to buy a new one, all searches give 'out of stock' or not available.

whilst researching, I came across a couple of mentions of alternative to the expensive controllers .
Pulse Width Modulators mentioned a couple of times.

Any Electronics people advice me on wether this might be way to control the power input to a 12v 36W resistive load?

I'm considering buying this from China:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2V-40V-1...654581?hash=item2ca7601b75:g:CGYAAOSwa-dWnfBL

  2. I don't see why it shouldn't work. It simply alters the mark space ratio between the on and off periods to vary the motor speed but that should also work for controlling the heat. It's certainly cheap enough although you'd need to fit into a weatherproof enclosure. Worth a try I'd say.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

  3. Thanks @Derek As you say, it's worth a try considering the price. Any idea what method a 'conventional' controller uses to modulate the power input to a heated jacket?

  4. Probably much the same. A resistive controller would generate lots of heat internally.

  5. Resistive controllers would not be allowed in law (CE) for that very reason
