Anyone recommend a 3D printer? Son is doing computer degree stuff which us above my pay grade and fancies one, obviously I have no idea what is about . Guess price range would be £5-700 what would that get us?
I know this is of no use now but Aldi were flogging 3D printers a few weeks ago. Think they were around the £300 mark.
I’ve been looking at getting a cheapish printer for a little while, I lifted the text lower down after the link from a non motorcycle forum this could be what I’ll buy for my Son. Clearly if your Son is at Uni he has a better insight than my lad and I about the software side. https://www.prusa3d.com/ I am a big fan of Prusa printers (in fact know very little about any other brands!) but they’re probably over budget and your chance of getting one before Chrimbo is zero anyway, so I won’t make any recommendations on the printer side. Fusion 360 is probably the go-to design software for most hobbyists now, there’s a free licence (which they are about to make slightly less functional, but not enough to be a problem). The main advantage is due to it’s popularity there are thousands of YT tutorials and extremely helpful forums, FB groups etc. It is complicit but a few evenings following tutorials is enough to crack the basics and then it all starts to make sense. I didn’t personally bother using or learning any simpler apps first, I’m glad of that now as after the initial steep learning curve you’re not going to come up against a situation where the software is the limiting factor. Definitely worth encouraging him to learn the design side of it as you can then present him with a list of bits you need for fixing stuff around the house etc Minimum PC requirements are pretty modest for simpler designs so pretty much anything will be OK.
I s looking at getting one earlier in the year but for various reasons, mainly time, decided not to. At the time I was looking at the Creality Ender 3 v2 or the 3 Pro. The for some food reviews and parts are really available around here (Vietnam). Amazon have them and prices are not bad. https://www.amazon.com/Creality-Printer-Printing-Function-220x220x250mm/dp/B07FFTHMMN I guess it depends on what you are looking to use it for.
