  2. If I may:
1993 is when the Maastricht Treaty was signed. But the EU started with the Rome Treaty effective in 1958 and was then called EEC (European Economic Community). And before that, it originated as the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) with the Paris Treaty in 1951 (6 members: Italy, West Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg).

The UK joined the EEC in 1973.

  3. Not quite.

Xenophobia is what you are alluding to: « dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries. »

Racism is more: « prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group. »

  4. I feel for them but they have changed their tone a bit. It's almost as if the EU fishing quotas weren't all that bad all of a sudden. I don't know how many times Michel Barnier has reminded the UK that you can't have your cake and eat it. What he should have said is 'you can't catch all your fish and sell it'

  5. Perhaps not all xenophobes are racist but all racists are xenophobes.
Although a phobia is defined as fear of something specific. Disliking all people of a country goes a lot further in my opinion.

  6. I’ve noticed an increase on Facebook from people requesting potential suppliers for bike parts in the UK as previously well known suppliers from the EU have (presently) stopped supplying to the UK.

  7. There is a thread on here of someone selling some barrels and pistons. He doesn't want to sell to the EU as it's too much hassle. That's exactly what's happening on both sides.

  8. he is an inshore fisherman, their catch isn't affected by the CFP and generally more pro EU

  9. Thanks

I’m familiar with the time line of the morphing of EEC into the EU. The date given 1993 is the year it stopped being an economic community transforming into a a embryonic political entity and diverging from just a trade bloc.

From memory it was the EEC EC and for now the EU.

  10. Take the black vs white antagonism in the US southern states (goes both ways, by the way, from my personal experience, so no judgment here). Well, some white Anglosaxon Protestant Americans hate black people. But they love ze Germans. That’s just an example. Could have used Swiss, Dutch, Austrians, or... Brits! Some black Americans hate white people. But they love their African brethrens. To the point they want to be called Afro Americans.

    Definitely racists, not quite xenophobic.

This is the definition of the Oxford dictionary, though. Fear of people from other countries, yes.

« Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, ... » you know the gig, Anakin.

  11. Considering NATO a (the) major political entity including all EU members and more (honest question here), in the UK, are « leavers » also inclined to seeing the UK leave NATO?

  12. I’d be very surprised if NATO is/was viewed in the UK as being political for me it is a purely defensive agreement.

It has a non European major contributor, only if this contributor left could I foresee the UK wishing to leave NATO.

I should think the majority of leavers view NATO as an essential component of our island defence.

Maybe if NATO did fold in The UK would seek a defensive pact with other partners, although let’s be honest the UK barely has a fighting force in any great number.

  13. Anyone know if there is anything to be aware of from the UK end when selling parts etc abroad, apart from the declaration forms.
Are there any hidden charges for us now, or will it solely be the receiver who gets stung and needs to be up to speed?

  14. It’s viewed the same way here in France. However, when I closely look at NATO organization, it looks very political to me. You can see dozens and dozens of non military oriented committees, and only a few really dealing with military issues (mainly defensive, as you say, but not exclusively anymore), the main being the Military Committee.

I wouldn’t be surprised if more civilians actually worked at the NATO HQ in Brussels than military.

  15. I guess you need to be aware which goods you can send to the EU. There are bound to be restrictions. Meat, fruit and dairy can't be sent or taken across. That was reported on the press already. I don't know if car parts have any restriction. I could imagine fuel tanks might be a no no. Time will tell.

  16. you are going to need to know the country of origin. & the relevent HS code for the customs declaration
if you just send stuff in the post then the recipient will likely get hit for vat, duty and and admin fee by the carrier. if you are unlucky then your package may be held at customs or returned and they wont refund you (depends on the carrier)

  17. it's looking like euro trackdays are going to need a Carnet document and insurance for each bike and possibly tools helmets and other kit too. having dealt with Carnets alot in the past, this is going to be a massive extra headache for TDOs

  18. Surely your choice ?
