The same problem with my uncle a few weeks back when the slag heaps walked off with his scrap metal in broad daylight, this was stuff just left over from building his extensions etc,and then they returned two weeks later for seconds.Has many cameras and straight up into the cloud for storage.These people don't play by our rules in society i'm afraid.Good luck whatever you do for prevention.
The rules as you say don’t apply to them, we have an idea but proving it is another thing, even the police reckon they know but catching them is another game. I do like the idea of wiring the mains across the gate, but in reality that might cause a load of paperwork etc.
You could try a couple of these placed strategically around the place. They fire a blank cartridge and make one hell of a bang. Just be careful you don't confuse the blank cartridge with a standard cartridge that someone has replaced the lead shot with rock salt (as used by SA law enforcement). Easy mistake to make, so I hear.

Thanks, we have a couple of wildlife cameras which record when movement is detected, plus a movement detector with a SIM card in it which texts, setup so it does not go off with dogs etc but has two detectors 2 and 5 feet off the ground. Not that I will be tackling any intruders but the police say to call them.

Motion activated perpetual Barry Manilow at 103dBA (Uk limits !!) with synchro lights with a camera recording if you like will catch anyone rapidly leaving the scene within seconds ........... Also works well with any loitering undesirables and drug addicts - apparently
