1200 New Bike Purchase Is This Suspicious ?advice Please

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Solstice, Apr 7, 2021.

  1. Chaps, advice please, I’ve put a deposit on a 2017 1200S, from a non Ducati dealer, bike is pretty much immaculate, but no handbook or service book, it’s done 2400 miles, with some detective work I’ve managed to establish that it had its 600 mile service 2 years ago, it was PCP so the dealer I’m buying from has bought it from the finance company, it will have fluids changed before I collect.
When I initially enquired I was told it had both keys, when I viewed they said they did not have a key for the panniers which they would obtain (along with the handbooks), I’m supposed to collect tomorrow (haven’t paid balance yet), but have been told that the key on the main fob doesn’t open the fuel filler, which is starting to sound a little suspect (why would the key on the main fob not open the fuel cap?)
I’ve asked for clarification that they have the red key, if they don’t is it a ball ache to obtain one?
    Thanks
    G

  3. I wouldn’t be handing any money over till they give you all the docs and keys etc.

  4. Same unless you know all the ins and outs. Mainly because you could just end up running into issues down the line.

  5. A good purchase depends on what you are paying vs what you are getting. If you aren't getting all the keys and missing an owners manual, provided you are paying sufficiently less than comparable bikes with those items to make it worthwhile I wouldn't worry.

  7. The price is good, and they have agreed to provide books and key, I was happy to take a punt on service as it had only done 2400 miles and they would service before I collected (I have subsequently established it had the 600 mile service, so not too concerned it hasn’t had annual service), the issue for me is can I / they get a new red key if neccesary ? And if the key on the main fob doesn’t fit the fuel cap could it be from another bike and have been reprogrammed?
Just trying to get all my ducks in order before I speak with them again

  8. Something is off. No bike with only 2400 miles should be needing different keys for any of the locks on it. It may be you can buy a lock set but with some experience of Ducati prices, that'll likely be in the hundreds. You could I suppose always fit an electronic fuel cap...again, not cheap. All the concerns you have, and any more that come up later will be shared with the next buyer, be that private or dealer. It has to affect the value negatively.

  9. 1 key fits all. And their should be a spare matched barrel for a top box.
1 of the 2 keys has to be the red master key.
There’s plenty more out there if not.

  10. Call Moto Rapido and ask them what they will charge to resolve these issues & how much it will cost in parts. Then you will will know whether your purchase price is good or not? Moto Rapido 01962 877998

  11. Thanks chaps, just had a chat with Snells, I’m going to pop back to the dealer to view again tomorrow and get a definitive answer and “eyes On” the keys

  12. Does the key unlock the seat?, pannier lock barrels can be "adjusted" to suit the key you have and you can of course fit an electronic fuel cap as mentioned. Not having the red key could be a pain but 3 x Multistradas on and I've still yet to use / need mine. I assume it's HPI clear? May also be worth looking at MOT history, all be it short to see if it tallies with mileage.

  13. Now, where is that bargepole?

  14. Am I missing something here - if the key doesn’t open the fuel cap, how are you going to get it home or ride it once it’s out of fuel?
    Sounds dodgy to me.

  15. It is simple. You never close it whilst congratulating yourself on how much money you have "saved".

  16. I buy damaged bikes and this is how I normally get them from the insurance, one key and no books, it. It may fit the tank but the barrel could be damaged. Last two bikes I purchased didn’t appear on the Hpi lists and the garage that bought one of them listed with out advising it was an insurance bike. Not good and did not deal with again.
As others have advised a dealer selling a straight bike should have all the keys and docs, and they should all work especially on a young bike.
To save a bit of cash you could end up with a money pit

  17. I would want to know why so many keys are missing/different. There will be a good reason but it might not be a reason you want to hear about.

  18. I’m going to revisit tomorrow, wasn’t too worried if key didn’t fit panniers, hadn’t thought that filler lock could have been damaged, think I will probably stamp my feet and demand my deposit back!

  19. Has the dealer provided you with a copy of the hpi check for the bike, or contact details of the last owner so you could see if any history available?

  20. I could be wrong but isn’t the red key the master from which you programme all other replacement keys? No red master key and you have to replace the ignition/immobiliser thingy?
